You might have been there when you were there.
And
They enshrined in law in Israel early on in the country's existence this honour of being a righteous among the nations, or sometimes referred to as righteous gentile.
It's non-Jews who, at risk of their own life and not for financial profit, chose to protect and save Jews during the Holocaust.
And my father had several of his saviours recognised in that way.
And I know from the stories of those, his saviours and others,
that those were extraordinary human beings who chose to do something inspirational and amazing for which I am eternally grateful because I would not exist if they hadn't done it.
They didn't just save my father or his parents.
They saved me because I wouldn't be here.
And they saved all the future generations.
And those people, this is what I always try to remember, they were ordinary people like you or me.
Some of the righteous that you'll see listed in Yad Vashem were diplomats and
politicians and business people, and some were nuns and farmers and workers and illiterate people.
It didn't matter.
That wasn't what was special about them.
What was special about them was their humanity and their sense of right and wrong.
And I think about that all the time when I think about what's going on in the world around us.
