He needs to light it and let it rage somewhat and catch things on fire in his room so as to be serious enough that his stepmother would be forced to call the fire department.

As I'm hearing this and reading these documents, it's pretty highly developed for somebody who is allegedly kept in starvation conditions, no contact with anybody else. You know, it's a testament, I think, to the human brain, to the will to live, to the whole fighting for survival mentality

And there's already some amount of poor treatment, allegedly, that he's suffering through as a result of taking food he wasn't allowed to take.
