We met. Okay. I heard a song of theirs. I've said this stupid story. I heard a song on the radio. Yeah. On the radio. Remember when we used to listen to the radio? And I was like, oh, I really like this song. Who's this band? And I was waiting for them to back announce it. They didn't. I went on the radio station's website and deduced who it was. Oh, look at you.

And saw they had a new album coming out. I posted about it on Instagram. This was the days of like no DMs, no tagging anybody. I just was like, just posted about them. Said like, can't wait for this album to come out.

You just heard. Just heard him. Okay. Okay. And a friend, like a mutual friend of ours is like, hey, Taylor, did you see that Mandy posted about your band? He figured out how to send an email through his manager to my manager. And she was like, oh, some guy in a band like forwarded you or I'm going to forward this email. And it was a very innocuous, like very typical Taylor.

How do you say it in French? The end of the marriage. I did not... So I was not, like, looking to be in a relationship. I was not looking to date. Yes. Taylor thought otherwise. So we finally, like... choose to go out to dinner and I walk in and he's the only guy in this restaurant because it's early. It's like five or six o'clock. And I was like, God damn it. He's really cute.

Like this was not what I wanted. And we ended up having this like. And stylish. Stylish and cool and funny, all the things. And we had this like epic three hour long date, closed the restaurant down, ended up going to a bar. Neither of us are big drinkers. So we just like, we got a sparkling water. We ran into his brother.

We ran into his brother and his brother's girlfriend, who now is my sister-in-law and like his best friend. They were all at this bar and we just like hung out and I got to meet like, it was a real froggies moment. And then he left or we, we, we parted ways and he left for four months to go on tour. So we proceeded to court, like have this courtship via FaceTime and texting and stuff.

And I totally fell in love. We fell in love with each other without holding hands, kissing, nothing. Because this date, it was just sort of like hug goodbye. We parted ways and then didn't see each other for like two months. And just like stayed in touch FaceTiming. And then when we did finally see each other, I met him in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Say it again.

I met him down at Baggage Claim and we like had our first kiss while we were waiting at the baggage carousel for my suitcase. And that was it. Been together ever since. So we waited two months to have our first kiss. It was very cute.

So now moving forward... I feel like all bets are off. We could kind of do anything. We have, you know, we're very grateful that the audience has come with us on this journey thus far and they trust us enough to know they're in good hands and we're going to be respectful and sort of let the story of this family unfold in the way that Dan and the writers sort of intended.

It was so easy with Milo. And it was so easy because at this point we had such a shared history. We had built so much together that it was a relief. It was sweet to finally meet this moment. Like, oh, we've been waiting for this.

And in my mind, obviously, we had had this sort of like... figure out what that looked like when you're building the building blocks of your relationship. But to actually get to be there and experience it and allow yourself to fall into it was very easy and effortless. And it was Ken.

But I think with the introduction of Vietnam, it's a really big swing. We're a network TV show with 42 minutes and 30 seconds each episode. And we went to Vietnam. And this is such a huge plot point, I think, for the entire third season. And it's a big question. It paints a more fully realized version of Jack.

Did you see people, like, pouring onto the field, too? I thought that was crazy. I was like, in what world? Like, the game ends, and people are freaking out, and it's a frenzy, and they're, like, jumping over there.

It shows him to be more complicated and complex than I think America and the audience has sort of come to know and love of this man. And it's such an interesting... toolbox that they've sort of allowed themselves. And I think, like, again, we're a third of the way through the series, right? And this is just an interesting turning point, I think, for the show.

And it starts off in such fashion because it's sort of a montage. Episode one of season three opens in the form of a montage, as a lot of our episodes do. But we're sort of fixating on this family and on this man that we've never seen before. And we're not quite sure, is it present day? Is it the past? There's some indicators that like, okay, I think this is in the past.

All right, pet parents, let's talk about what's really going into your dog's bowl. If you've ever dealt with gut issues, picky eaters, or itchy skin, you know how hard it is to find food that actually works.

Let me talk to you about Marshmallow, our dog we rescued about a year ago. We found him on the street and you would think he wouldn't be as picky of an eater as he is. But let me tell you, he is a very picky eater. We've tried all kinds of different food and different ways to sort of coax him into eating his breakfast or his dinner.

But it wasn't until we switched to Spot and Tango's Unkibble that he was actually excited to dig into his food. It's so gratifying to sort of see him jump right into the bowl, enjoying his food. and not having to coax him with treats or something else to get him to eat breakfast or dinner.

It's a handsome man with an afro and a beard. And we're like, okay, who is he? How does he factor in? Who is he in the family? And we follow him and it's sort of intercut with... Kate and Toby deciding they want to make a baby. Fertility clinic factoring in. Deja's running with Randall. We recognize that Shauna has given up her parental rights. We see Kevin and Zoe in bed with each other.

And sort of being able to draw upon this other part of the Steelers history, Pittsburgh, like all of that, that makes sense for the family.

He has a lot of different colors in the mix and we get to find out more about him more than he ever really reveals to his wife as well. Yeah. Which I love. I love when we see like a fuller picture that maybe other characters aren't aware of. Yeah. But we as the audience get insight into that.

It's interesting, as we've said kind of all along, like, It's the story of this family. It's just told out of order. You're watching the video cassettes of like this family's life. They're just not in order. So that's inherently what provides the mystery because we're not watching things in sequential order, which is interesting because to me, that's not gimmicky.

I think her partner had feelings for Lindsay's ex. And so they didn't like each other. Cut to a year later, my ex had moved across the country and her and I slowly became best friends and bonded over our love of Taylor Swift. From there, we had a year and a half of hiding feelings from each other and a true will they, won't they cliche.

You did that. And he also has the line before he's like, uh, shall we commence the awkward? Yeah. Okay. So those things happen. There is. Okay. Uh, R&B, Randall and Beth, they are going down this road towards adoption. They're getting ready to take their trip out to Los Angeles. He says to Beth, like, look, please laugh at my brother. He already thinks that you don't think he's funny.

Because like, Ryan, how come we can't take more time? And she's like, please stop. Can't we just get this over with? Can we just get it over with? Come on. I got kids. I got kids. Don't make that sound. She does, sometimes she's like, she says, come on, come on. And I'm like, I don't, nevermind. I'll go watch another episode of This Is Us.

And he says, it's question 15. Like, are you prepared to deal with a child who has a history of trauma or other sort of physical attributes that... you're not familiar with, like things that are unknowns, the X factors that with your genes and your sort of rearing from the beginning, you kind of have a control of the environment.

Now you're introducing someone into your space that, you know, is going to disrupt that to a certain extent necessarily. And he's like, how do you know we can deal with that unknown, right? She's like, cause we can't. Like I just said yes to everything. She's like, but don't you think you're being a little cavalier?

And I think it's a really interesting conversation because I'm sure it's something that a lot of people who have biological children who are entering into the field of adoption may very well ask themselves. You know what I'm saying? Because it's like, I know our genes. I know how that worked together. I know how we got a chance to raise, but like now we don't get all of that.

Absolutely. And they have this conversation and she says that like your brother's all worried and freaking out over this adoption thing. And this is something that he actually wanted himself. And Kev's like, yeah, that sounds like Randall. Like he usually doesn't do something unless he is 100% sure he's going to succeed.

And then Kevin says, but you're about to. And she's like, what? How do you know this? She's like, you fell for the Manny's game, Ma. She's like, who do you think was Cyrano-ing him through that whole thing? And so she's like, and they have this moment of connection. And at the end of it, she's like, I do think you funny, Kevin. I think because they can offer perspective. You know what I'm saying? When someone has just a little bit of distance, when you hear it from them, it hits a little bit different. It's like the person who you're closest to, oh, you're supposed to say that. Right.

You know what I mean? Right, right, right. You could have said one way or the other. And she said, I think you're funny, Kevin. It was good. He's very nervous. He knows that he's sort of like, things kind of got out of hand last time he was on this set, but he's sort of made a rebound, and now he's being asked to come back, and he knows there's a black Manny there, and good for America, it's good for the world if there's a black Manny, but he wants- That we never see. We never see Morris Chestnut as the Manny.

And I think he says like, you know, I kind of did it by myself, but I don't know if I can do that this time. Is that right?

And he sort of eschews a liquid lunch. He has a bottle that's in his file cabinet that he pulls out and then throws into the trash can. because he's not gonna go down there while he's tempted to, he's not going to.

But this was a moment of generosity because what was happening and the sort of theme of that episode, and it continues throughout season two, is that I'm doing too much by myself.

Right? And there's an echoing that happens in the episode where we see McKenzie early in the episode because Jack on his lunch break sometimes just goes to have lunch with his daughter and hang out and whatnot. And she can see he's going through a tough time and she puts her hands on his face. Right? Yeah. And said, it's going to be okay, dad, whatever.

And so at the end of this episode, he's talking to Katie girl. I always wondered, did Jack come up? I think like Milo, it's just sort of like Katie girl. It's just like one of those things that sticks in my head. And he is telling her about like how he has a drinking problem. And, you know, he tried to get over it and now he's having a tough time with it. And he just wanted to let her know.

It was so tender and loving and beautiful. Just talk to a little bit because two things really start to happen that we find from the past. And it's already happened in the past in season one with Mackenzie, the younger version. But we start to really see the connection between this young woman and her father.

There's the wonderful thing about this whole scenario is if we compare it to the past, there's the talent show that's going on and everybody's getting ready for the talent show. And Kev's in particular, Parker's commitment to his Mr. T. Is admirable. Is admirable.

You existed. And you see, like, Rebecca just take it on the chin, like, mm. I don't know exactly what to do with that, but okay. What can you say to that? I think the show, and you highlight this, Hannah, is that there's a level of empathy that we can have for our parents in recognizing that they are not perfect people. They are people doing the best that they can, right?

Because so much of it is us living it out at the same timeline. And you have all this stuff, like they should have done this, they should have done that. And then you're like, oh, I'm making mistakes too. Maybe I should just actually have a little bit more grace for the people for doing the best that they could. Yeah.

Singing Lean On Me. And this is interesting, because I'm wondering how you felt about this as an actor. Mandy Moore, I'm speaking to right now, for those who are not looking at me. When she starts to sing in the beginning or whatnot, and you say something about like, oh, sweetheart, you hold that note just a little bit longer, you're going to be perfect, but it sounds absolutely beautiful.

And what I sort of find in season two is that we've laid the landscape for the world and it's already very rich. And it just, it's like the roots go deeper. Do you know what I'm saying?

You know that. And you were saying you sound amazing, et cetera, et cetera. And Mackenzie would hit you with this look of like, OK, right? And it hit me at this moment with Amari.

And then you pass the dress along to her and you talk about how awesome she's going to be. And when I get nervous, why not? Wanted you to have this thing.

It's like, you know that that's not necessarily the case, but that's also what you're projecting into that interaction.

Of course, when I'm not at my actual home, I rely on Airbnb to capture that, how would you say, feels like home feeling.

Yeah, of course. Of course. I'm just dialing up the number to make sure I got it in there so I don't accidentally call her voicemail again. That's good. That's good. Once bitten, twice shy. Good for you, buddy. All right. Roll that voicemail.

I was telling Rachel the other day, I'm like, I think originally I got into acting because I didn't know what any emotions looked like. And I was like, I'm gonna go try these on and see how they feel.

Yeah. Like a 14, 15-year-old trying on all these basic emotions. That's amazing.

This is, again, to your point of this analog world, of landlines, no internet, no Facebook, where a man can grow old and end up on his deathbed having no reference as to what his son has been up to for the last... Yeah, what his life looks like. Eight to ten years. Right. Like, no way to check in, no way to, like, you know, face... Social media and things.

And she has formed a little girl squad, which is natural. It's a natural developmental thing of like, you know, whatever it is. And poor Bear, all he wants is to be a part of the girl squad. Totally. And Rachel was relaying to me like he was really, really sad about it.

I listened to that. I just listened to that episode. Andrew said that? Yeah. They interviewed the boys on the podcast. The podcast is called We Don't Always Agree. It is fantastic. And it is the real deal.

I heard that. You just have to keep throwing back to you so it keeps you engaged. Because if we get too engaged, you and I, we look over and she's like hitting forehead on the microphone.

You recognize it.
You recognize it.
Yes. Better than the 30s? Oh, yeah.
Because my family. You got the whole family. It's like theory at the end.
Oh, I remember this story.
Maybe that's why I remember it.
Oh yes. Yes.
Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Like a crazy person. So I feel like everybody says your 40s and your 50s, like it just gets better and better. These are like the best chapters of your life. So far, so good.
You know what I'm talking about.
That is true romance.
More That Was Us after this short break.

I bought a ton of new stuff for this rental house that we're staying in right now. I had to buy new sheets and towels and all kinds of things. And I have to tell you, Quinn's makes the very best I've ever had.

I'm with her.
Like a traditional fry.
Yeah, you understand the passage of time through them.
Yes, yes, yes.
We met.
I was like, oh yeah, there's David Bowie. So I figured, I was like, never heard of Dawes. I went on iTunes. I mean, this is 2015. I got you. So this was a while ago.
Like, thank you so much for like the kind words or something.
yeah totally he was like we'll send you an album if you want to come to a show like in LA or something let me know and we started emailing back and forth then that led to texting and then that led to like we should go have dinner and I still had not looked him up didn't know what he looked like really yeah man because I was in the middle of a divorce understood so I was like not really I love that you tried to find
That's the way I'm saying it.
Well, what I think is like an interesting delineation is that... And Dan sort of spoke to it when he was here recently. This is sort of like... a big change for the show, right?
Saskatchewan.
The Plains of Canada. Yes. And he met me at the airport. He was on tour there and it was like a rom-com. I met him down at Baggage Claim and we like had our first kiss while we were waiting at the baggage carousel for my suitcase. And that was it. Been together ever since. So we waited two months to have our first kiss. It was very cute.
Yeah, because we've explored Jack's passing, we know how he passed now, and that chapter has sort of come to a very... Yeah. It's come to a close.
Oh, yeah.
So there. Mm-hmm.
Are you serious?
I remember that. I was like.
No, not yet.
White Lotus.
It is White Lotus-y. White Lotus-coated.
I don't have game. It's all a facade. Thank you. But no, I definitely don't.
Filming it?
It was so easy with Milo. And it was so easy because at this point we had such a shared history. We had built so much together that it was a relief. It was sweet to finally meet this moment. Like, oh, we've been waiting for this.
And in my mind, obviously, we had had this sort of like... figure out what that looked like when you're building the building blocks of your relationship. But to actually get to be there and experience it and allow yourself to fall into it was very easy and effortless. And it was Ken.
I mean, it's just like the familiar apparatus of our show that made everything feel logistically safe and you knew to trust it.
So well-written.
I would never do that.
Yeah, exactly.
And he kind of smiles like, all right, it was a good day.
Yeah, leans in for a kiss. On my mama, right?
I know, that's what I mean.
With the Pearsons, besides him being a stealer.
Did you see people, like, pouring onto the field, too? I thought that was crazy. I was like, in what world? Like, the game ends, and people are freaking out, and it's a frenzy, and they're, like, jumping over there.
Oh, my gosh. Wow, that must have been so fun.
Exactly, exactly.
That Kevin and Zoe are hooking up.
Oh, yeah.
From episode one.
Exceptional person I had written down too.
Well, she left, right? She left. Because at the end of the episode, Beth and Randall are like calling for the girls to come downstairs. They're going to sort of cut the cake. And she comes in the front door and it's like, oh.
Is that for me? Is that for me?
It's so dumb. But it's genius. It's perfect. It's a lot of fun. And it's a pair of running shoes.
Very thoughtful.
And it's 40% less expensive than frozen food, but still made with the same high-quality human-grade ingredients. Plus, it's shelf-stable, which makes life easier for travel and everyday feeding.
Should we at least remark on the fact at the end of this episode, we flash into the future again.
To older Randall.
Older Tess.
Again saying.
It's time to go see her. She's not ready. They now walk out of her office. She excuses herself to go to the bathroom or something, right?
And Randall calls.
Which is cool.
Nondescript future phone.
By himself.
So that ignited speculation of where's Kate?
Is she alive? Is she not? Are they together?
Oh, really? Oh, you think after the fact people were like... Yeah, it was like, yeah, nobody's going to know.
We know about his history though with depression.
With Kate.
What else is new, Chris? Jesus. Enough.
I think the egg retrieval they think would be too dangerous.
I would imagine.
Knockin' boots. We keep seeing this flashing back to this mystery man who's now suiting up in a Steelers jersey. That's right.
And Chrissy, like the way Chrissy ends that scene and says, it's nice to meet you as she's like choking back tears, broke me. Oh, goodness gracious.
Yeah, I mean, you usually are a part of providing the levity of the show.
And everyone is.
Well, at the party, she sort of reveals to everybody, which is so vulnerable. Like, just so you guys know, we want a baby, and we're trying for a baby, and we're trying to figure this out, and we just got this news.
Okay, okay. This football family, we're starting to sort of We're also playing on the same night of Jack and Rebecca meeting. Right. And then it sort of is revealed that this is... What's his name?
Yeah, and no one notices, and it doesn't factor in.
so we got to get rid of these antidepressants yeah man and they come home from the party and have a conversation where they essentially decide like you know what there are other ways to have other ways to do it a kid yeah screw ivf he says it was stressing him out yeah he was really nervous he's worried about her yeah it's just why why have this pressure yep on this new marriage screw ivf and as that's happening they get a call from the doctor she wants us to come back in yeah
Franco Harris. That's right.
We haven't yet, but I'm sure there will be a time. Yeah.
The most important part, right? The most important detail. And this is the night of something they called the Immaculate Reception. That is absolutely... Come on, Mandy Moore! I'm talking too much. I'm talking too much.
And it's not something you think about when you're planning a family. You're like, wow, the expense will be incurred once the child arrives, essentially. I think that's what we're all sort of raised believing. And when it's not as easy as one hopes and we do have to employ these methods of starting a family, you're right. It's like, it's the last thing you want to be thinking about.
It's so stressful to begin with.
Yeah. A lot of phone calls.
She's protective of her cousin.
Yeah, she's complicated.
She makes documentaries.
I don't think so. I think that's the next episode.
It is. Indeed.
But I love that Dan and our writers are able to weave in the sort of historical context for a family like the Pearsons who love football, football's their life, the Super Bowl, like all of that is sort of woven into the fabric of the family. And sort of being able to draw upon this other part of the Steelers history, Pittsburgh, like all of that, that makes sense for the family.
He's not just a superhero.
He is a human. Yes. He is fallible.
Like, oh, this is just, we're just playing things out of order is all.
We love a good how did you meet moments. We obviously talked about the three of our moments with our partners. And this week's episode gave us a big one, too. It was Jack and Rebecca's very first date.
Here we go.
Again, like you said, widening the swing of this pendulum. Yeah. It's so fascinating, and I feel like it's only setting us up and the audience up for more of that to come as the show continues on. Right.
Look at that.
It's Joshua. There we go.
Wait, look at them. You have their proposal picture.
You have to see her face. She's like, what is happening?
His sweet smile.
Baby number three.
I'll do the next one. Go for it. Hi, guys. I love you all so much, and your podcast is the highlight of my week always. Thank you. My partner and I met while I was dating someone else. She had feelings for them, so we hated each other when we first met. Okay.
While I was dating someone else.
She had feelings for them.
For them? Yeah, I think for the partner. So we hated each other when we first met.
That's how I'm taking it.
So Lindsay and her partner.
Finally, I got the courage to have the conversation after we went to an Eros tour together and And I looked over at her and thought, oh, yeah, you're my forever person. I can't let you go. Now we've been together for two years. We've lived together, have cats together. Real marker of a relationship. I did that with my husband. And I'll be popping the question next year.
I have attached our Halloween costume from our first year of dating. You can probably guess what we were. And yes, I still have the jersey. Life's funny like that. Anyway, sending my best to you guys. Cheers.
Yeah, let's do it.
I'm behind. I'm behind.
So there's Lindsay and Kira.
Travis and Taylor. They're Travis and Taylor for those not watching on YouTube. Beautiful.
But Lindsay, I hope Kira doesn't listen to this podcast. Because she says she's popping the question next year. I mean, that needs to be a bit of a... That's true.
Start from the beginning.
Oh. I love the way this one's written.
Look at these people. Look at Dave and Helen.
Oh, here we go.
Where Jack and Rebecca first met.
Oh, I love Dave and Helen. Wow. Look at those pictures. You guys. What a couple.
A public payphone. Yeah, yeah.
That's my destiny calling. He said, hello.
Thank you for sharing it with us.
I love Origins.
I love love. And I love our fan segment.
Fun fact.
Hanging on every word.
If you could just get me some... Also, the amount of candy apple.
If you can make the choice. I had no choice in this particular case. She was supposed to like get into that candy apple immediately. She loves candy apples. Did you do a spit bucket? I did. I did a spit bucket with the candy bar too.
There's just like a trash can next to me. I was like, I'm done with the Mars bars.
Everyone's laughing in the room right now.
Look it up.
Kind of, kind of.
I can't say I do. Listen, we've got a lot to watch at lunch. A lot to keep up with.
No, but I mean, I know who he is.
Nothing. Just, you know, momming and hanging out.
Did they melt?
Same old, same old.
But Snickers, you could sponsor us. That's okay. You'd be fine with that.
That track is crazy.
Okay, so candy apples, it was a lot of really gross, sticky, hardened sugar.
Outside. It was actually, it was humid.
Oh, you're sweet.
Yeah, I had a beret, but I had to have a little bit of the candy apple on my lip so he could sort of wipe it off.
And it's a strong choice. And it works. It was Hala, our costume designer. It was her idea. She engineered that.
No, actually... Because it works. I really liked it. Yeah, I did too.
Yeah, you just had your birthday. Happy belated.
You know, Hala and I had a good working relationship. I think she was so... she was so excited about dressing Rebecca.
Like, I think it was a real... And I've mentioned this before, but Zoe and Michael, like, whenever they got the chance to sort of, like, focus on early days Rebecca, like Jack and Rebecca courtship or early marriage or something, I think everybody got super excited because it meant that they could, like, live out their late 70s, early 80s, like, fantasy. So I never questioned the Bray.
I always loved, like... Yeah, I love that that sort of became her signature, her signature accessory.
Things are kind of starting to go downhill.
And she's like, yeah, no, I guess. I guess it's not that bad. I guess not. In my mind, I'm like, am I crazy? Like, cause it feels like it's like actually raining. People are using umbrellas. They're ducking to stand under.
Yeah. She's like, are you sure you don't want anything? He's like, no, no, I'm good.
I think that's about to happen.
Yeah, the couch. Too comfortable.
Yeah, we need to drop the temperature in here a little bit.
Same style of glasses as the kid in the car.
Michael Angarano.
And of course, neither one of them have been cast yet. No. So the man in the photo is neither of them.
Secrets. And about what being a brother means or should mean.
It's an amazing thing that this show does about every decision that we make, every stance that we take is a culmination of everything that has happened to us up to this moment. And the way that Dan kind of retroactively reveals
why, you know, Jack has a certain stance on something, or why Jack is doing something this way instead of that way, or how Jack came to drink too much, you know what I mean? Whatever the quote-unquote trauma is.
It's just beautiful to watch unfold.
You can't go too far. They still have that fuzz.
I feel like Peloton can go hard. Yes.
And it's not just about workouts. With Peloton, you can find exactly what you need to get centered and motivated, whether visiting family, adjusting to a new city, or stepping into a new chapter of your life. It's like having your own wellness partner ready whenever you are.

Looking for pills. Yeah, this is the first episode where Kevin starts to look a little gray. Yeah. Starts to look a little dark under the eyes.
He has re-injured his knee. He's re-injured his knee. Which at this point, we have or have not, no, we have not yet seen the origination of the knee injury.
But we know that on the Ron Howard film, he has now blown up his knee and has reinvestigated painkillers. Exactly.
Period.
Period.
Like he instantly is able to connect with her in a way that Randall's like- The too muchness of Randall. And the charm of Kevin.
They're really settling into their distaste for each other.
He walks back into the ballroom and gets dressed down by Sophie. So you embarrassed me, right?
And even when faced with the opportunity to correct things, you know, opts out.
You wanna speak on it just a little bit? I need to back up just a little bit because there's an earlier moment of joy, a realization of a lifelong dream of getting to clear all of the things off my desk.
Oh, it's brilliant. It is. Kate shows up and says, Toby, I need to talk to you in your office. And he thinks they're about to have sex. So he walks in and just sweeps everything off the desk. It's like the actor's dream come true. And I was like, finally!
I have told Rachel, I have told Rachel for my 50th birthday, what I want, what I actually want is for her to set up a dinner for me and like a friend at like a nice restaurant. And I want to stage an altercation where I go, I want him out of here. And I just tip the, just wipe everything off the table.
That's better. No, Mandy, you're right, that's better.
Have sex with her in a restaurant. That's better. Why didn't I think of that?
That is better. That is better. No, I just, if you ever get it, just set up, get some plastic stuff, put it on your kitchen table, and then just sweep it off. Wipe it off. I got that sense as an actor. I was like, he's been waiting for this.
When I saw that in the script, I was like, four years of acting college.
All for this. All for today. Okay, so you cleared a table. Yes.
Yeah, he's at IT Solutions.
He works in IT, and apparently he's the boss. He was the boss.
They're like, we're going to have to justify these apartments they live in pretty quick here because Kate's not working. How high up in the IT world is this guy? Okay, he has his own office. He can clear the desk. And he feels comfortable clearing a desk. That's the amount of money. He's making six figures.
Yeah, it's not that. She reveals that she is pregnant. Toby gets very, very excited, but is quickly tamped down by her saying, okay, keep it to yourself. Yeah. He's like, cricket.
We didn't experience any of that. I will say Rachel and I did have a bit of a conflict over the pregnancy reveal. Okay. To me. What happened? Wait, tell, do tell. So it's now kind of a joke, so I can talk about it. Okay, oh God, oh God. I found out that Rachel was pregnant with Bear the first time around via text message when she sent me a photo of the pregnancy test.
And I was sitting on an airplane on the way to a convention or something, currently being talked at by an elderly man with white wine breath.
was just like so what do you do and you're like looking at yourself and i'm like oh what do you mean a convention what kind of convention are you going to just what just pinot grigio like wafting i'm like this is so exciting and the worst i just wanted to be like would you shut up I just found out I'm gonna be a dad. I gotta dance up and down the aisle or to Hootie and the Blowfish or something.
Yeah, I had to get home and be like, yeah, I'm so excited. By the way, not the way to tell me.
You guys go, is it a coffee shop? She takes me to a coffee shop and says, okay, okay, fine. You can tell one person in here.
Exactly.
And Toby walks up to the barista and not only says, that's my guy, but asks him, can you put this song on, please? Because it's Toby's happy song. It also turns out to be kind of one of Sully's happy songs.
The Hoodie and the Blowfish record was kind of a big deal for 12-year-old, 13-year-old Chris. I loved Hoodie and the Blowfish.
I got to meet Darius Rucker at like an award show. It was another big deal for me.
How much fun room did you have to play? So this episode was directed by John and Glenn, who were two of our veteran, maybe more mischievous directors?
And these are the two directors that, when we started season two, told me, I don't know if they told anybody else, but they were like, just so you know, You guys are about to have a long run. You know these characters. You do what you want to do.
Directors are going to come, but go ahead and stretch your legs. Yeah. And that's the wrong thing to tell Chris Sullivan. Yeah. You're like, watch this. Because watch me stretch. And so I'm like, well, here's what's going to happen in this coffee shop then, John and Glenn. I'm going to push it too far and you tell me when to stop. Okay.
The flash dance. Yeah, that was it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So was that you in the moment? Yeah, yeah. This was like, all right, let's do it. Let's turn this music on. And I was like, oh, what about this bucket of water? And he's like, we'll do it last. We'll do it last.
And sound came and took my mic and took all the electrical things off of me, and then I dumped the water over my head, and that was a wrap for the day. It was absolutely fantastic. It was joyful. And I've had moments like that. I've definitely been up on a tabletop in a college cafeteria dancing and singing. I love it.
Whenever Cait is listening to Caitlyn, no, to Madison.
is when you really see Chrissy's Florida come out. She has Florida face, and it's when she really gets, really gets sass. She really does. I love it.
Her head kind of gets going.
Yeah, I do.
They say their piece. The ironic part is that we understand Kate's perspective, but we also are beginning to really understand Madison's perspective of body dysmorphia. The things that she's actually going through are real problems that people deal with. when they're dealing with food consumption and things like this.
It's just opposite ends of that spectrum, whether it's overeating or anorexia, bulimia, whatever the dysfunction is in the relationship with food. But they take it, they kind of resolve it in the meeting and then take it out into the parking lot, which is a real Florida move. No offense, Florida, but it feels like a lot of parking lot.
Yeah, you called a ranger station and left a message on a reel-to-reel tape.
Too many arguments happening in parking lots.
Back and forth to Toronto, man. I'm the king of Toronto. He's shooting in Toronto. More importantly, I'm the king of Toronto Airbnbs. Ooh.
Absolutely.
I'm going to send you a link because we have a great Airbnb cabin in Lake Arrowhead. Please.
I will send you the link. Please. I'm thinking about NOLA. Ooh, a little New Orleans trip.
You've earned it. This has been a really big year for travel for me personally. I've had projects everywhere. I get to, of course, record wonderful spots with my Pearson family here in person and come home. but I'm excited to be in a place where I can get comfortable. Of course, when I'm not at my actual home, I rely on Airbnb to capture that, how would you say, feels like home feeling.
Your home might be worth more than you think. Find out how much at Airbnb.com slash host. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the That Was Us podcast, Caitlin Thompson. Yay, Kate! What's going on, sister?
Yeah, smart.
Dan Fogelman's wife, ladies and gentlemen. I did the same thing. Not with the same producer, but the same, yeah.
You know Ken Olin.
Oh, man.
Do you have more insight? You certainly have more insight than I do about Madison's storyline and when it was, I don't know, when it was established that maybe she was going to become romantically involved with Kevin. How far out did Dan know that that's the way it was going?
For sure. Like it was in the Thanksgiving episode.
which is what happens in this episode. We see the transition from foes to a blossoming friendship that starts to happen.
But it's like, oh, this is,
Yeah, we were all grounded in dramatic moments with lighthearted moments scattered about. And she is, for lack of a better trope, is presented as the joke in this. And so it's kind of a reverse. She has to now establish herself as a serious... you know, subject matter or a serious character or someone who's grounded in more than just a gag.
It really worked out great for all of us, didn't it? We really lucked out.
some insider stuff like Dan as he was writing it would joke to all of us he was like I can't believe I'm doing this I cannot believe I'm doing this I am writing my wife
Oh, yeah. Ken was very helpful, too, in appeasing everyone's anxiety around the- Right?
Yeah, she's on the phone and someone's holding a radio up to the phone. Correct. And he's talking into the radio. Yes, yes, yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Wow, wow. You're like, Dan, you actually could have planned this better. You were in control of this.
This actress is really going.
Yeah, negativity bias, man.
Well, if it helps your writing, hold us in your mind. Hold... if you need to hear a voice if you need to hear a voice if the character needs to sound a certain way some of us are unemployed i am you know if yeah if you just if you need someone to read something for you let us know i want to get the dream team back together yeah please anytime there you go i'm like fan fiction alternate
i mean i love you guys you guys know that i would kill to work with any of you at any time in any capacity you guys it goes both ways pitch this pitch we pit we came up with this idea yesterday pitch this to dan while you guys are bouncing ideas around is that the the whole first season of sterling's new show paradise is just one of randall's uh anxiety dreams and he wakes up and it's and it's a prequel to the next season of this is us you wouldn't believe it oh my god
We do the Dallas.
Okay, cool.
Yeah, of course. Of course. I'm just dialing up the number to make sure I got it in there so I don't accidentally call her voicemail again. That's good. That's good. Once bitten, twice shy. Good for you, buddy. All right. Roll that voicemail.
Doesn't know how to feel. Doesn't know how to express it. Which is why a lot of us get into acting.
I was telling Rachel the other day, I'm like, I think originally I got into acting because I didn't know what any emotions looked like. And I was like, I'm gonna go try these on and see how they feel.
Yeah. Like a 14, 15-year-old trying on all these basic emotions. That's amazing.
All right, welcome back to The Retread. It is brought to you by Peloton. Find your push, find your power with Peloton. On this episode of the podcast, we discovered that I desperately enjoy dancing around in public. Very much so. And pouring buckets of water on myself.
And we learned that Mandy has many people in her life who have been dead to her for a long time, but she's unwilling to mention. This has been The Retread, brought to you by Peloton.
You've called him after you've already gone to the facility. Yes. And this is a big reveal.
For Jack. Jack's dad, that Jack has a wife and a family. So it was also a big reveal for Jack that you have now met his father.
And you could do that. You could literally.
Which is what Jack says. That man has been dead to me for a long time.
Yeah, yeah. Hot take, who in your life has been dead to you for a long time?
Take anyone? Any takers? Any takers want to put that on a podcast? No?
Sorry, internet, I tried. That's the only note I had on this episode. Wait.
This type of heartbreak is... already happening in Forbear. And I came home last night late and this morning I was looking around and I saw this little scrap of paper and it's the first handwritten note
that he has written himself and it's and it's a happy a happy birthday message to a friend in his class with a bunch of candles and i could barely make out happy birthday you know it's a four-year-old sure but it's a thing like i was like oh this is a thing like it was left here for a reason And this little girl didn't want it. Didn't want it.
And she has formed a little girl squad, which is natural. It's a natural developmental thing of like, you know, whatever it is. And poor Bear, all he wants is to be a part of the girl squad. Totally. And Rachel was relaying to me like he was really, really sad about it.
And I'm just like, how long does... This is going to go on for a long time, this heartbreak. Because Bear's probably already over it. And now I'm talking about it on a podcast.
And I'm about to cry.
I listened to that. I just listened to that episode. Andrew said that? Yeah. They interviewed the boys on the podcast. The podcast is called We Don't Always Agree. It is fantastic. And it is the real deal.
I'm listening to it. I'm like, hey. And at one point, even Rye says to you, Sterling, you can be a lot.
And sometimes I just need some space. And so, yeah, that's an interesting parallel.
I heard that. You just have to keep throwing back to you so it keeps you engaged. Because if we get too engaged, you and I, we look over and she's like hitting forehead on the microphone.
You recognize it.
And she's like, oh, I remember those bars and just trying to fight through the smoke and everything. And then she hits her with like. Oh, you used to sing? Oh, wow. You used to sing? Oh, man. And I was like, oh, gosh. Jeez, Olive. I was like, it was so uncool.
Subsequent addiction issues, like the introduction of Deja into the Black Pearson family or whatnot.
Oh, he'll understand.
He'll understand because they, so Kate leaves and then Toby's like, you know what? I kind of got to go. This is her first gig. I got to go. And she's like, I understand.
And she stands up and you're like, oh, shit.
We'll be right back with more That Was Us.
I'm going to go see my family.
Listen, like many of you, we're getting into the swing of holiday planning. Whether you want to or not, it's the season for figuring out who is traveling where, who is arriving when, and is the dog coming? And for all these reasons, we rely on Airbnbs.
You know, I can always use a little extra money in my pocket. Your home might be worth more than you think. Find out how much at airbnb.com slash host. So you guys go to listen to her sing and she starts off a little slow just, you know, cause she sees you guys and she's like, oh goodness, I wasn't expecting that or what have you, but she sings gorgeous. It's absolutely beautiful. Right.
And after it's over. this beautiful scene between the two ladies saying that like, you know what Bugs, like you'll learn to like sort of power through those kinds of audiences, but you sang incredibly beautifully. Like I'm putting those things together. And she's like, what does that even mean?
And so look, Mandy just for the people who can't see is holding her face like, why'd I have to say that shit?
I loved it. So they kind of have it, you know, Kate lets it out and it's like, you know, trying to remember everything that she said because it was really beautiful.
And so like, and also, now this is gonna, what I'm gonna remember of my first job. It's not the actual performance, it's this conversation. To which Rebecca comes up to Toby and she's like, are you seeing this? Like, did I do that? And Toby, this, now you wanna talk about a lesson for living. Like, delightful, kind, generous, boundary drawn. Yes.
Yeah. Like, it's like, look, I already got to deal with this twin brother over here. I was like, but when it comes to you guys, I know things are complicated. And does she get a little sensitive when you're around? Probably. That's between you and me. But letting you know, moving forward, I'm team Kate.
Forever. You know what I'm saying? So like whatever you need to do, like try not to put me in the middle of it because that's my girl.
You know what I'm saying? And I think that was, I want couples to do that. Yeah. Take note. Whether it's a brother or a best friend or a parent or what have you, like, you gotta let them know. Yeah. Because you teach people how to treat you. That's right. Do you know what I mean? And the fact that you did it from jump. Yeah.
More or less. So that's sort of one of the things that was sort of just like, I was struck by.
A lot of us wait a couple years and like, I should probably have a conversation. And at that point, you can, but it is too late.
You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Excellent job.
Absolutely.
It was good. It was solid. I mean, it was, it was one of those moments where I was like, I should do, I should do that for my wife. My wife should do that for me. Like I, I, I got really excited. Yeah.
And she's like, I don't. I don't think it's funny at all. She's like, well, please don't say that in front of him. He's sensitive about it. Please be kind. She's like, what are you going to do about these adoption forms?
Of something that he wants, right? And so she's like, okay, you can fill him out on the plane. They have a little cute banter about like how you feel about the lovemaking. And she's like, it's pretty cool until you want to like do a quickie. And she's like, quit making fun of me. Until I want a quickie, my husband needs too much romance. There you go. I think that's a line from my wife too.
But they fly out. He still hasn't filled out his paperwork. So we're all in the audience waiting and she tries to give him the forms or whatnot. And he starts to, it's like, I don't want to do it. I'm going to go outside. And tells me it's going to take two or three hours. And she's like, uh-uh. She comes outside too. And she's like, what's going on, man? Like, what is the deal?
You know what I'm saying? She's like, I'm going to go into his trailer because I know he's the only person to use it. I'm going to use that one because a clean bathroom is an asset on set.
Absolutely. And they have this conversation and she says that like your brother's all worried and freaking out over this adoption thing. And this is something that he actually wanted himself. And Kev's like, yeah, that sounds like Randall. Like he usually doesn't do something unless he is 100% sure he's going to succeed.
And she's like, yeah. And he goes like the one time that he actually sort of put himself out there was this really cool dreadlocked girl that he's met in college who was way out of his league with his sweater vest and whatnot. And she's like, yeah, he was so nervous and whatnot. I can still remember that corny first line that he came up with. He's like, you don't know me right now.
And he's like, I know. You know what I'm saying?
I think because they can offer perspective. You know what I'm saying? When someone has just a little bit of distance, when you hear it from them, it hits a little bit different. It's like the person who you're closest to, oh, you're supposed to say that. Right.
You know what I mean? Right, right, right. You could have said one way or the other. And she said, I think you're funny, Kevin. It was good. But it goes back to like, so Randall entering into this thing, because I think the way that he originally envisioned it, he had control. You know what I'm saying?
Having a baby, bringing a baby in, like, at least the most control that he could have and succeed in that way.
There is this moment after she has this conversation with Kev and she comes back together with Randall and she just jumps into his arms and they kiss each other.
It's exactly because it's like, he was so discombobulated or whatnot. She has a way of, as so many people have said, like even in our fan mail, like just settling him.
You're gonna be all right.
well did you know she was going to go airborne yeah she jumped and you caught her and it was just like technically that counts as fight choreography there's a little i think we did get an addendum you got a stunt bump and i know i do remember because the first time like i had to ask when somebody was like the only way to really support them sure is from the bum it's from the buttocks and i was like are you cool with this and she's like yes okay thank you for asking
Yeah. But yeah, I was like, cause I was like, I'm trying to hold a thigh. I was like, it's not quite the same. Cause he's like dripping down the middle or drooping down the middle.
Carrie, so with the past storyline.
Which one?
Right.
This is the drive home. Like she said, get in the car at the end of 201. And we opened with the drive home. And she's talking about, well, you can do this, man. Like you did it before, you can do it again. And he goes, it took time. You know, it wasn't easy. And I think he says like, you know, I kind of did it by myself, but I don't know if I can do that this time. Is that right?
That's in this episode. And she asks him like, so how did you do it last time? And we see him at the office having a tough day. I think he just got chewed out, what have you. And he sort of eschews a liquid lunch. He has a bottle that's in his file cabinet that he pulls out and then throws into the trash can. because he's not gonna go down there while he's tempted to, he's not going to.
And he decides that like, well, maybe I'll go to an AA meeting. We see him standing in the doorway. He walks to the meeting. He stands in the doorway. He listens for a bit. He walks away, right? Later on in that episode, he goes to... A boxing gym. He goes to the boxing gym. He's like, how much for an hour? He's like, first one's free. He's like, you want training?
He's like, no, just trying to keep a promise to my wife, right? I just need four minutes of slow-mo. Three, four minutes of slow-mo so I can fit in this montage as I beautifully hit this back.
Because in the montage, I believe, like, there's a few flashbacks, but one of the first ones we get is him as young Jack in Vietnam.
Like, what was the- I'm sure there were contractual obligations to other things, but he's nervous and he's talking to Sophie at the beginning and he's checking out his abs and his abs are always fantastic because Justin's built like an Asgardian. And so you can see him sort of going through the nerves of it all and they start to play out.
Jumping out. And he is not a mechanic.
Right.
Yeah, he's fully mounted, right? And so we get the sense of like, oh, Jack is working through more than we realized. Yes. Okay.
And then he makes it to the talent show and she's like, you almost missed, you know, missed the tee. He's like, no, I got it. And it's fixed. He says, he's like, he says something like, It's fixed. I got it.
Yeah, don't worry about it, right?
I can't wait to talk to Hannah about that.
It's going to be awesome. She says, or Mackenzie, the youngest Kate, is like, how's work? And she's like, you know, my boss has a way of making it feel like a job sometimes. And then, you know, how are you going to do a talent show? She's like, I don't know. Mom has a way of making it feel like a job sometimes. And then like at the end of the interaction, she just holds his face and it's so sweet.
And when you see the echo of it happening with Hannah and Milo just breaks down in his daughter's hands.
Yes.
Yeah, because it's like, if you're walking around the whole time and the kid is having to parent you, it's like, come on, man, you gotta figure this out. Don't rob that childhood. But this was a moment of generosity because what was happening and the sort of theme of that episode, and it continues throughout season two, is that I'm doing too much by myself.
I'm not letting anybody in close enough to be of assistance so they can be in it with me.
Beautiful. And the coolest part was where he just stood outside of the AA meeting before. He now allows his wife to take him to AA.
And he walks in. And he walks in. Right? So, yeah. It's a good setup for what's all about to come.
She's like, do that scene, that thing you did with- The meltdown.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are back with our guest. You know her as the most delightful member of the big three, the middle big three, that is. Please welcome Hannah Zeal. What's going on?
Look at that haircut. You look so stylish. This is great.
I think this is pretty well done. I'm impressed.
This is amazing. Real quick, not to embarrass, but because I'm from St. Louis, and St. Louis is all about baseball. We had a baseball player that I didn't know about.
We have the arch, too.
And then we have St. Louis Cardinals. That's right. Yes. Remember a longtime member of the St. Louis Cardinals was a dude by the name of Todd Zeal. Hannah's dad. What? And I remember like walking up to you on set and I was like, I never put it together. And I was like, Hannah, is your dad Todd's energy? She's like, yeah.
He wants to be Clooney. And she says something to the effect like, you know, this is like your least attractive quality, right? And he's like, I'm aware.
Are you defecating me? What is going on?
Emotional athletes. Did you guys play anything?
Meant to be.
So wait, we talked about this just oh so briefly, but Mandy, admit you, because we just had Logan on the show like last episode.
But it makes us want to.
But it's almost the order of the big three. Cause like first came me, then came me. And then, so then hopefully we can get Niles at one point in time too.
but but mandy had mentioned that like we had to go back and reshoot like a timeline that you guys because there was another three actors that were hired before you things didn't quite work out and so with a really quick turnaround you guys had to come in and join us so talk to us a little bit about the process of how the show the audition came for you because of the quick turnaround also it felt so much like
The Manny didn't do the same ratings as ER. But on set, he starts to reenact it, and they're playing around, and it turns out that the showrunner, played by the incredibly hysterical Andrew Santino, who...
Come on, man. What? You heard Chipotle when they're still doing the vegan beans but mixing in the pork juice with them. Listen, they're not giving us any money, Sterling.
Did you just quit? Did you tell him, say, hey, man, I got to go? Like, I just booked the show? Or did you just, like, bounce up out of the Chipotle?
I squeezed them into my mouth. And got out of there.
Because that's the thing, they're not flashbacks per se, they're just different timelines. You know what I'm saying? Like we explore each timeline pretty fully. And so I guess, yeah, that's why it becomes what it is.
So people know, you'd see them together all the time.
He's a beast. So he overhears the whole thing and there's an awkward moment and they move on through it or what have you. And it is right. It's one of those moments where it reminds me of when I get a chance to bring family to set and they don't know how to act. Like they're like, what is going on? Like there's a door to nowhere. It's so exciting. Kevin's like, that's a door to nowhere.
I feel the same way with Chrissy and Justin too. That's the family, their family.
Those are stairs to nowhere.
Let me ask you, because this is in episode 202 and you're in it at the very end.
And you're there just listening to him. And my God, woman, you put your hands on this grown man's face. And I was like, I should get a daughter. I was like, these boys ain't gonna do this to me. I need a little girl to go put her hands on my face.
And with that, I say, good morning, lady and gentleman.
It was so tender and loving and beautiful. Just talk to a little bit because two things really start to happen that we find from the past. And it's already happened in the past in season one with Mackenzie, the younger version. But we start to really see the connection between this young woman and her father.
And then we also begin to see, like, the sort of friction between this young woman and her mother. So I'm just very curious.
Because at first I said, Betty, say what? And then Miguel's like, no, Miguel.
I just wanted to know for you, like, because like, what was it like entering into that space? Like sort of living that reality, both with Jack and Rebecca?
He's so subtle. It's the best thing. Even though they're in a slightly better place, but still.
There's the wonderful thing about this whole scenario is if we compare it to the past, there's the talent show that's going on and everybody's getting ready for the talent show. And Kev's in particular, Parker's commitment to his Mr. T. Is admirable. Is admirable.
It's funny, in episode 201, Chrissy says, like, you guys are having an argument. And she said, like, what exactly did I do? And she's like, just being you or, like, your presence, like, you're existing or something.
Yeah.
I'm sure you will.
Will you do me a favor? When we get back into the exploration of your relationship during this timeline, will you come back and talk to us, please? Because that's one of the... Yes. That relationship, I think, made our viewers collectively be like, who is this D-bag? And get him out of here.
You'll come back. You'll come back and talk to us. Please.
I'm back at Chipotle. I've mastered the guacamole.
Hugs and kisses. Hannah, thank you so much for making time to come hang out with us. We all need to get together in person at some point in time and just sit down and commiserate.
We're going to figure something out.
I'll help you out.
Right on.
Thank you, Hannah.
How are we doing today, gang? Doing very well. I'm very excited to be here. I'll tell you right now, I'm a little loopy. I was up. My wife had me. Well, not my wife had me. Let me say. I had some things to do when I got home. Let me tell you something about my wife.
Yes, ma'am. This fan segment is called Ratings R Us, and we're about to shout out some really dope people.
Let's see some love.
Needs to become a regular thing. You guys had me laughing out loud and then crying again at the end of this week's latest episode. I love tuning in every week to relive this wonderful show. The insight gained from the deep dives into the show and characters is so beautiful. Thank you for the wonderful content and stories you continue to bring us.
Okay, we got to do more hot takes, guys. Let's honor that. Hot take! Let's read another review. Let's do it.
I-Lady Kitty?
Doesn't even matter. We appreciate it, L-Lady Kitty. Come on now, what's next? What we got?
Here's my impression. It's true. Because look, you know what's funny? Because the whole time I was watching, I was like, am I going to like this Mr. T? And I was like, you know what? That's not a bad Mr. T. He's pretty cute.

That Was Us is filmed at The Crow and produced by Rabbit Grin Productions and Sarah Warehunt. Music by Taylor Goldsmith and Griffin Goldsmith.
Watch this.
Let me show you my talent. The string is just hanging from the thing. And Kev's like, bro, you're so, and you're so protective. And even I was like, come on, man, you can't go do the yo-yo on stage.
Anyway, the thing that's really sweet about it is to see Sophie, like he gets up on stage as a young boy and he does the Mr. T and everybody's like, I don't know how I should feel about this or whatnot. But Sophie is just cracking up. Taken with him. And so we go to the future. It turns out that Casey, Andrew Santino's character, changed the ending of The Manny.
Do we know if he did it to embarrass him or not?
In a giant diaper. In order to find a baby, you got to think like a baby. So he's crawling around like, baby, where are you? In a giant diaper. The whole audience is cracking up, though. But in particular, Sophie is just like, delighted.
It's beautiful. Okay, so wait, so let's go back to the past and let's talk about Kate and singing. Is it Lean On Me?
Singing Lean On Me. And this is interesting, because I'm wondering how you felt about this as an actor. Mandy Moore, I'm speaking to right now, for those who are not looking at me. When she starts to sing in the beginning or whatnot, and you say something about like, oh, sweetheart, you hold that note just a little bit longer, you're going to be perfect, but it sounds absolutely beautiful.
Responsibilities with regards to my family. So I woke up early.
Like, I'm curious for you in that moment, are you like, are you aware that like, is it an interjection that's not solicited? Are you like, no, this feels like good advice. Like, I'm curious as an actor.
Where did that come from? There are times, like the closest sort of parallel in my life is my kids and playing sports and I haven't played sports as well and wanting to say something to them immediately after the game. Don't. Yeah.
To watch some episodes.
Constructive.
I try to be constructive. But even still, like in that moment, they just need to have a little bit of breath. Yeah. And then like the next day, I may be like, yo, bro, what did you think about the game? And then like allow them to start the conversation. And I was like, I saw one thing. Are you interested in hearing it or not? And he'd be like, yeah, what did you see?
And then if not, I'll hold it to myself. Get your pads on. I'll meet you in the backyard. Yeah.
And they don't disappoint. No. I'm going to say that. Like it wasn't a chore to wake up to watch. It was an absolute joy. And what I sort of find in season two is that we've laid the landscape for the world and it's already very rich. And it just, it's like the roots go deeper. Do you know what I'm saying?
But I'm still learning that, because sometimes I'm like, oh, if I could just impart this one thing, it would take it to a whole nother level. So I saw both sides in the listening and in the giving of the information.
It was only Kate. I was struck by also, I don't want to call it hyperbole, but it was the strength of the enthusiasm of how he's like, oh, sweetheart, you have the best voice in the house. You know that. And you were saying you sound amazing, et cetera, et cetera. And Mackenzie would hit you with this look of like, OK, right? And it hit me at this moment with Amari.
I can say things in a way that are heightened and they're received with love. And with Andrew, who's a little bit older, if I use the same sort of heightened language, he's like, no, bro, I can see the forest for the trees.
I love you too. So what it reminded was, because in the beginning you talked about how beautiful her voice is. Then we see you making the dress for her. And then you pass the dress along to her and you talk about how awesome she's going to be. And when I get nervous, why not? Wanted you to have this thing.
And so she's like, okay, I'm popping to the shower and I'll catch up with you in a little bit. And she's like, mom, mom. She puts it on. She's feeling all good. And she hears Mandy Moore, perfect pitch, in the shower where the acoustics are just ripe. Just lean on me when you're not strong. And she's like, you know what? I can't sing. Kate was like, you know what I'm saying?
And this is the second time that something has happened with you.
But so, okay, so then they go to the talent show and she decides she doesn't want to sing.
On today's episode of That Was Us, we'll be discussing season two, episode two, A Manny Splendid Thing. Kevin is forced to swallow his pride during a taping of The Manny. Kate gets her first gig, but can't stop comparing herself to her mother. Randall and Beth are really contemplating their next steps regarding adoption. And Jack confronts his demons in the wake of his fight with Rebecca.
Yeah, her voice is hurting. She's like, you sure? If you're nervous, I can help you. And she's like, no.
That's a really fun turn for her. So then in the present, we see Kate. Is this where Kate's sort of like a little... So we're all at the mani-taping.
Like with regards to the exploration that really begins with the relationship between Rebecca and Kate, as we get into Kevin's storyline and sort of like his reticence to discuss his own past with his dad.
She talks about, Kate does, she's sweating mom's arrival. Every time my mom comes to visit, I'm not gonna, every time my mom comes to visit. So she, I put that down in a quote because it's like every time. And when you use words like always and or never, you know what I'm saying? It's like, you know that that's not necessarily the case, but that's also what you're projecting into that interaction.
Right. And she says, I'm not gonna overreact to everything she says this time. I'm not gonna act like a child. And one of the first thing that Rebecca does is hugs her, looks at her and says, you look so good. And the way that she, and I recognize this like in such a way as someone who didn't always feel that the best about themselves. It's like, really, do I? Like Kate hit her with a, okay.
And trying to fight the impulse that she just said that she wasn't going to go into. So it reminds me of like right there at, when she gets the phone call to come to record, to sing, And Rebecca's like, you about to go through a sound check? And she's like, oh, what kind of place are you going to go to? And it's a bar.
