So Egbert made that choice and the family made a significant distance up toward the pass before the terrain defeated them.

And at some point, Egbert would have felt the vehicle grounding out on the rocks.

And at some point, the calculus would have become very clear.

The pass was not happening, so they turned around.

And on the way back, the map presented what looked like an alternative.

because Anvil Canyon Road branched off from the route they had driven in on and appeared to offer a more direct path back toward the valley, a shortcut that would save them from retracing the full length of the trail they had already driven on, which was very rough, as we now know.
