I think it was one of the main driving factors behind making it.
I think I really wanted to get the correct version of her story out there and I knew how much she had inspired me and my friends and I really wanted to put her back.
in history, you know, in the place where she was always meant to be.
What was so fascinating when the film did launch originally in America and when I would go out and do screenings and meet audience members post-screening, I'd always say there's like three different tiers of audience member.
You'd have the diehard fans like ourselves who loved and adored her and were just like, yes, there it is.
Then you'd meet the kind of naysayers who had written her off as mad and bad and listened to the press rhetoric around her.
And they really wanted to come up and talk to me.
And they're always quite pensive and quite quiet.
And they were like, God, I really hadn't read the situation right at all.
And they almost want you to absolve them of their wrong thinking or something.
But then the third tier was all these young men
passionate tight-fisted many young women coming up to saying oh my god oh my god like how have I missed this she's so fucking cool her music's exceptional but beyond all of that her absolute audacity and her strength and her utter refusal to shrink
I mean, I feel as years pass and, you know, we're now in 2026 and look at the state of the world that we're in.
She just feels like such a needed tonic for so many people of all ages to remember the power of the individual, of what you can do to step up.
It comes with consequences, but to be bold and to be brave, standing up for what's right, you know, it's more critical now than ever.
