And she was doing it at a time before it was much wider known what was happening within the Catholic Church.
That all unfolded in the years after her infamous Saturday Night Live 1992 performance, which is iconic.
And that was where she tears up the picture of the Pope.
And she sang away in a candlelit room, acapella.
And at the end, the final verse, she started changing the lyrics and making it about child abuse and held up a picture of the Pope and ripped it in half to a stunned live audience and all of the audiences in their living rooms across America.
How could this young 24-year-old Irish woman dare do this in our country?
So they came down on her like a ton of bricks to put her back in her box.
They had steamrollers in Times Square, lots of men in suits and steamrollers literally rolling over her records.
They managed to bring steamrollers to Times Square, just to make the point.
And what was so deeply satisfying in all of this, when Nothing Compares did come out, we had an American launch.
We were launching with Showtime, a channel over there.
And I'll never forget when I got a text message from a friend who was in New York at the time saying, have you seen this?
It was Times Square with a monolithic, gigantic art poster.
which is just her face staring out across the whole of Times Square.
