That was the vanilla version.

And I really, I felt like I had let down myself.
I felt like I'd let down my family.

When I got fired, when I lost my contract, I really felt like I had...
failed everybody.
And there's something, I guess, scrappy inside of me that, you know, if you kick me when I'm down, I'm going to come out of that a little bit wiser and a little bit braver.
And once that happened,
I was able to just sit down and write the whole book over from a very fresh perspective.

I really like writing in the voice of a child because a child can see through the bull shit.
Yes.
Can I say that?
Yes, you can.
And they're going to speak truths that sometimes an adult loses sight of.
So because of the plot of this story, sort of the punchline, so to speak, that you know what it is, I also needed an adult.
So I was able to mix the two narrators, the 11-year-old girl and, you know, the 24-year-old kind of old maid, unmarried woman, also from Mississippi.
And I felt like that way I could give two perspectives together.
