There is a lot of reward to spending 200 consecutive days with a team and to be able to find those details that make storytelling
worth it.
You know, I like a game story every now and then there's some analysis that can be fun.
Breaking news is a terrifying thing to do, but can be rewarding if done right.
I think though, if I could really strip it down to one thing, it is the storytelling that personifies these athletes.
It has been something that I've really, really enjoyed doing and something I haven't gotten to do too often with all of the losing.
Well, thank you.
I appreciate that.
And that is, I think, my favorite part of the job is being able to go in and take advantage of the access that baseball gives you.
My first year, like we talked about, there was no clubhouse access.
I had to essentially report on a team and I didn't even shake the manager's hand at that point until June.
So that's two months of no face-to-face conversation, getting to know someone in a very, very
know vague setting with 20 other people on a zoom call and i'm very unsolidified in my career it's my first beat writing job and then i experience what it was like to be in the clubhouse every day and i think you're spot on throughout on 162 game season there are so many different things in a baseball game it's so nuanced that way that you can go out and really talk to someone about and half the time these things don't make it to print
But there are things that you can draw upon later in the season or later in a player's career as in, hey, we talked about this.
If a player has a big game, we can go back to two months ago when he talked about some swing changes he made after a game.
And that kind of stuff, I think, makes, again, beat writing coverage so invaluable to the fan because you get this access that, if done right, can really provide a whole other level of insight to your favorite baseball team.
That is something I really try to do every day.
There is something to be said about just the
conversations of being able to walk into a clubhouse and be like hey let's talk about this i noticed something about this talking about a player's family talking about you know weekend plans so much of the grind of the daily season is just small talk and then eventually those small talk conversations will lead to something big and that's where you can really run with it oh you're so right and in it's i think one of my biggest pet peeves katie is i think that
No, of course.
