And again, you get the sense of both these flawed figures in the family that are all imperfect.
And yet you still get a sense of like a shared struggle and love for each other that comes through really strong.
So those are just a few that pop into my head.
I'm sure if I thought about it longer, I could list a bunch more.
One of the ones I read a long time ago that was the first book I had read in which surfing was a primary component of the narrative was Tim Winton's Breath.
I read that probably almost 20 years ago now, or maybe I'm dating myself and it didn't come out that long ago, but I feel like I read it when I was right around 20, maybe it was a little bit later.
But I remember reading that and the rendering of
what it feels like to surf and what it feels like to be in the water among large waves.
It was captured so perfectly.
I thought that that has certainly, that book has stayed with me and that, that rendering of the ocean is one that, that is certainly very influential on me.
And then maybe it's just because she's on my mind now that, you know, when we talk about Jesmyn Ward, I can still remember the way that she spoke or she wrote about the hurricane making landfall in Mississippi and the way that she describes that in Salvage the Bones.
That had an incredible influence and impact on me.
Thank you so much for having me.
I really appreciate it.
