Where I live, I communicate with the local police department fairly often, not to do stories, but just about stuff they're working on.
Every year, there's at least one and sometimes several cases that go back 35, 40, even 50 years that are being solved because they've got familial DNA.
They have DNA testing that wasn't available years earlier.
It's because they have a cold case department that can look into these things.
