And it's a similar thing, I suppose, in fiction.
It's that eavesdropping on other people's lives, right?
That's so appealing and wonderful and that we know makes us better people at the end of the day.
And there's something of that same thing in eavesdropping on people's working lives.
If they let you into that body of knowledge where you feel quite humbled,
Yeah, that was probably one of the favourite, my favourite ones to write just because, yeah, such a closed world, right?
Other than that, I guess the famous novel Perfume by Patrick... Suskind.
When did that come out?
I feel like that was a while ago now, right?
It was, yeah.
And I suppose it had that historic element.
So what was interesting in speaking to...
this perfumer was that these things are still happening.
And I think, you know, in our postmodern world, we often forget that these crafts are being kept alive by very special people who work really hard to keep those skill sets alive.
And it's a kind of magic what they, what they do.
His name is Jonathan Midgley and very sadly he has passed away since I wrote that profile.
But I'm sure he would have been so happy to hear you say that because, again, he was just following his own nose, excuse the pun, but literally he has the olfactory equivalent of perfect pitch.
