Is it just a metaphor?
Is it a means of controlling people?
Or is hell a real place?
When we open the Bible to learn about hell,
We might be surprised by what we read in the Old Testament.
Hell is not a thoroughly covered topic throughout Old Testament literature.
Typically, the Old Testament refers to the realm of the dead as Sheol.
However, as the New Testament writers would later clarify in greater detail, Sheol would not have the final say.
Psalm 49 verse 15 reads,
But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.
Through the prophet Hosea, God promised, I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol.
I shall redeem them from death.
God's people anticipated a life beyond the grave.
They hoped that God would conquer the enemy of death.
And in at least one passage, we find a brief reminder that death is not the end for the wicked either.
Daniel 12 verse 2 says, Daniel speaks of everlasting shame and contempt, but he does not explain this everlasting punishment further or give a name to this eternal shame.
The Old Testament is full of men inspired and empowered by the Spirit of God.
Men like Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Daniel, and many others.
These prophets proclaimed the Word of God, foretold of coming events, and revealed God's plan for a promised Messiah.
And all these men carried words of warning and judgment.
