Oh, we're supposed to love our children equally, aren't we?
But I actually loved going to Sydney because I have not really left Brisbane.
for a very long period of time.
And so to actually be down there and to see writers that I don't see every day was an absolute treat.
And Brisbane's a little bit more reserved, I think.
So it was a gentle, quiet and respectful space in Brisbane.
It was really lovely.
I think this is a book that I've always been meaning to write.
It's a book about trying to find out about my family history, which was denied to me.
I was raised by my grandmother, who's Slovene, and I knew that my mother and my aunt and my grandfather were all born in Egypt.
But I had no way of putting any of the pieces together because my family refused to speak about the family history.
And so the only way to do that was to travel overseas and to find out for myself.
But I couldn't do that until my grandmother died because she really didn't want me to find out anything about myself.
And so after she died, I felt that I could finally go and try and find out who I was.
Well, my grandmother was a maker of paper mache things.
So she actually used to make dinosaurs and fairy tale creatures and mythological creatures all out of paper and glue.
And I grew up doing that with her.
And so as a result, I think I've learnt that it's deep in my psyche now
that I can make anything if I have paper and glue.
