Both of those witnesses described members of the public then intervening, including a moped rider who arrived suddenly, struck the man with a helmet before others joined in to restrain him.

And they also recalled a moment after the man had been restrained,

when a cyclist picked up the knife, ran with it towards a nearby green area where they happened to be standing on the other side of the road.

And initially, given, I suppose, the chaotic circumstances they unfolded before their eyes, they feared this was possibly another attacker coming towards them.

They were briefly concerned running.

They were concerned for their own welfare.

They realised then that this man was actually securing the weapon, throwing it over nearby railings.

They both later contacted Gardaí.
