The sea was incredibly calm.
The sky was full of stars, but it was very, very cold.
And many of those who were on the Titanic had never seen an iceberg before.
So people were actually quite excited about the idea that they might see their very first iceberg.
Tragically, less than a minute before.
And one of the reasons for that, it was 20 to 12 at night and...
Frederick Fleet, the gentleman who did spot the iceberg, did not have a set of binoculars because the key to the cupboard that held the binoculars had been mistakenly removed from the Titanic when it first set off.
And at no point did anyone on the bridge, including Captain Smith, send one of the sets of five sets of binoculars that they had on the bridge up
to those in the crow's nest when they knew that they were heading to an ice field.
Did they know there was a collision right away?
What happened on board?
I mean, Evelyn herself described it as it just felt like when a boat with a rubber edge sort of
glides past but, you know, still hits a jetty.
It felt no more dramatic than that.
And they tried to divert away from it, but in many ways the way that it diverted and the short amount of time that they had to try and steer away from it ensured that it hit the worst possible spot.
the guys down in the boiler rooms, the stokers, because they saw the water pouring in.
And it was pouring into an area that had what was known as watertight bulkheads, which if water comes in,
On the bridge, they immediately activate the watertight bulkheads.
So they immediately did.
And some of those stokers only just had enough time to get out before the bulkheads closed.
