And usually there are two main reasons behind those events.
So if you have a toxic chemical that is at a level that will kill them, that's an important one.
The second one is what I would call a chronic condition.
So those are the sorts of situations where the needs of the fish are not met.
The conditions are not optimal in terms of things like
temperature, food availability, dissolved oxygen.
And I think, like you mentioned, there's this perception that eel are robust.
However, their life cycle is very complex.
So they live very, very long.
And then they reproduce at sea.
So all those life stages can be quite sensitive.
So we have to be very careful in the way that we manage the eels.
and to look at long-term management options.
Well, they're very susceptible in terms of impacts of land-based activities and practices.
So there's been a lot of habitat modifications and they live up rivers.
