But hip-hop is much more than just DJing.
There's sort of four core elements.
DJing, graffiti art, breaking, which is dancing to the break in the song, hence why it eventually becomes known as breakdancing.
And then, of course, there's rapping.
Now, that is something that Kool Herc had actually heard a version of back in Jamaica.
So these are all of the crucial pillars being sort of codified in real time.
So we've got DJ Kool Herc on the decks.
We've got people on the mics with the beginnings of what we now recognize as rap.
Let's talk about what's going on on the dance floor.
Because you say that everyone's coming, you know, starting to kind of get down.
What is it that we're seeing on that dance floor?
So DJ crews develop, the kids are breakdancing, these block parties roll throughout the 1970s.
Then, on the night of the 13th of July, 1977, all of the lights in New York
There is a massive power outage that leaves the city without electricity for over a day.
Because there's this massive influx of DJ equipment that kind of, let's just say, proliferates throughout the city.
Proliferates, yeah, yeah.
