I just always find it odd that given the choices of the essence of politics and elections of the essence of politics, that you would want to become prime minister whilst avoiding some form of electoral process.
That it's just so built into the system that votes are part of how you get things thrown on the floor of the House of Commons, how you got selected, how you got elected, all those things.
And yet to become the leader of a party, leader of a country,
There's then a suggestion that sometimes you go, oh, yeah, well, we won't have an election this time.
Let's just get on with it.
You think, well, I think legitimacy matters as well.
That's different.
That's based on talent.
That's merit.
The parallels of politics.
Okay, let's analyse some of the language from Starmer's speech when he announced that he was going to stand down.
He said, I don't know whether to do the voice or not.
Six years ago, I inherited a Labour Party that was politically, financially and morally bankrupt.
Strong words, obviously aimed at Jeremy Corbyn, who said it was a disgraceful comment to make.
But doesn't Starmer have to make this point?
Because in a way, his most unequivocal achievement is making the Labour Party electable again.
You can argue about the job he's done as Prime Minister, but in a way...
I guess that's pretty indisputable.
