David's defeated Goliath. So, I'm trying to remember exactly what is said about him. Yes, and there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. Now, Aidan... Wait, really quickly, which verse is that? It's 17.4. 1 Samuel 17.4. Got it. So... Do you recall the...

Sir Francis Drake's belief about what the etymology of Patagonians was.

He thought it was supposed to be penta, and then he thought that gonies, for some reason, meant cubits. Yeah. I did have somebody comment that penta is a prefix that can mean five in Spanish. It comes from Greek, so it's been transliterated in Spanish. Penta itself... is a transliterate, a transliterative term.

So if you were assuming that they were going for a Spanish language thing, you would think that they would have gone with something that was closer to Cinco. That was not to say that Penta can't be used in Spanish at all, but rather I would expect if they were going Spanish or Portuguese, then the term they would use would have been related to Cinco rather than Penta.

But he thought that Penta, he thought it was Pentagones and that that meant five cubits, which is seven and a half feet. which means that Goliath being six cubits in a span puts him closer to nine or nine and a half. So Goliath is somebody who can adequately be described as a giant. Not just a tall person. That is outside the realm of human possibility, as far as we're aware.

Exactly. And we're told he had a helmet made of brass. He was armed with a coat of mail. These are all probably inadequate translations, just based on the time. It probably would not have been mail in the sense we understand it today. And the weight of the coat was 5,000 shekels of brass. So he's wearing a coat that is literally like 90 pounds. Have you ever worn chain mail?

I've worn something that was heavy. I've worn aluminum chain mail. Yeah. It's like 30 pounds. Steel is like 60. This guy was wearing 90 to 100. So we're talking about a dude who's not just tall. This would be somebody with an extraordinary amount of girth as well. I'm trying to find, though, because if I remember correctly, there is a mention of his ancestry.

And for some reason, I'm not finding it. Which is driving me insane. And I'm wondering if it was a note. Yeah, so nine and three quarters feet, this guy. And oh, I have the actual exact weight here, 125 pounds of armor. Which is just insane. So the giant that we're having described in the Bible is nearly 10 feet tall. He wears armor that weighs 125 pounds.

And he carries a javelin that is basically made of a weaver's beam. And I thought we got direct mention of his ancestry in Samuel. I don't know why I'm mixing that up. But I want to contrast that with the story we get about the Patagonians. Because one thing that I see all the time is people saying we have all these accounts of giants. We have these accounts of giants in the Bible.

And we have these accounts of giants from Native American stories. And we have these accounts of giants from exploratory expeditions. So if all of these people are describing giants, Aidan, surely there must be giants, right? You would think. At least they might be giants.
