And trying to figure out, based on what is said, where the hell these guys landed and how it's Lanzo Meadows. Because for those who aren't aware of the Vinland colony and how all that broke down, back in the 60s, archaeologists found a Viking settlement, basically a longhouse, at a spot called Lanzo Meadows on the northern coast of Newfoundland. Newfoundland? Newfoundland?

Yeah, Newfoundland, I think. Anyway, point being, Newfoundland, maybe? I don't know. Every time I say it, a Canadian corrects me, and no matter how I say it, a Canadian corrects me.

Yeah.
Yeah.
That's fair. Anyway, this place, Lanzo Meadows, it's basically a Viking longhouse. There's evidence of other artifacts there. It's not really up for debate. There was a Viking colony there, or a Norse colony, I should say. The problem is that you cannot follow the directions from the sagas and get there. And it's not like...

It's not like they're broadly disagreeing on what the location was, nor are they, nor does it seem vague. Like it's a little vague in that there are a few different places that match. It's that all of them mention the settlement being up a river and by the side of a lake. And that's not where Lanzo Meadows is at all. It's on the coastline.

So, like, Leif Erikson, Torvald, Thorfinn Carlsefni, all of their settlements are described as being in places that are not Lanzo Meadows. In one account, Torvald is described as dying in a place that should be Newfoundland. And in the other one, it sounds like Labrador.

In one, there's a place called, this is my favorite, the Torfin Carlsefni expedition, which in one account includes Torvald, and in the other account also includes a guy named Torvald who's not the same Torvald. Yeah, right? Isn't it great? But then he is somehow also the right Torvald. It's driving me insane.

He goes west out of the western settlement in Greenland, and he stops in a place called the Bear Isles. And then he goes to Helluland. Helluland is the land of the flat stones, typically identified as Baffin Island. There are no islands between the Western Settlement and Baffin Island. Not one. Could be icebergs, maybe. That had polar bears on them, and that's why they were called Bear Islands.

But you want to know what's great? After they reach Helluland from the Bear Islands, they go south for a couple of days and come to a place called Bear Island. Why'd they name it Bear Island, Aiden? Do you want to take a guess? Were there bears on the island? There was a bear on the island. Not bears, bear. There was a bear on the island. And that's also just southeast of Markland.

You know what Markland means? Land of the mark. You know what the mark is? Trees. Do you know how little that narrows it down?
