The other thing that struck me about James Henley's crime is how easy it was for him to steal these houses.

Their job is not to investigate the validity of these deeds transferring property ownership from one person to another.
Their job is just to record those deeds in the public record.
And that's the weak link in the chain that allows home theft to occur.

You can go to your office supply store, get a notary stamp, order it online.
But people are like, oh, my God, it's been notarized.
It's got to be good.
At the end of the day, it's a rubber stamp.
So we've got James Henley, prolific con artist, long criminal history.
$1.1 million stolen in his COVID unemployment scam, $225,000 in a home title theft scam, basically, or a satisfaction of mortgage scam, really.
Then he steals five homes.
That's another $260,000.
And then we got two cars totaling about $120,000 in value that he was able to steal by tricking an attorney into paying for them.
How much time are you going to give this guy?
I think he pled guilty.
