And so what the study found was that specifically for people with elevated homocysteine, that supplementing with the B complex by up to 50% reduced shrinkage of the brain, reduced the rate of atrophy of the brain.
Now, this effect was modified by people that had good omega-3 status.
So that's important.
And the effect was also dependent on whether or not they had high homocysteine levels.
So this is all, again, there is no one size fits all.
This is precision nutrition we're talking about.
So if you go and get your labs drawn, you have high levels of homocysteine, you can take a B complex.
Chances are you'll see your homocysteine levels drop.
This occurred with me.
I had a, I think it was like a homocysteine of...
I don't know, like 11.
It came down with, you know, after a couple of months of taking B vitamins to like six or seven.
High homocysteine is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, for cardiovascular disease.
And so what the study, the Vitacog study found was that for people with high homocysteine levels, taking a B complex lowered homocysteine led to a reduced atrophy rate of the brain.
and also coincided with clinically meaningful improvement in cognitive function, which is great.
So again, not one size fits all.
If you have high homocysteine, consider a B complex.
And that was the VITA-COG trial.
Crucially, crucially important stuff.
And then most recently, I think good data came out supporting the use of a multivitamin for older adults at risk for cognitive decline.
