And I think she is the most extraordinary writer.
And I know those books aren't for everybody, but I just feel that she's probably the greatest living writer.
So there, how's that for hyperbole?
The arrest particularly was so shocking.
I mean, I was outraged and devastated and I wanted to call someone and say, have you heard what's happened?
I mean, her ability to inhabit that world is to me the absolute extreme apogee of writerly brilliance.
I mean, I think very few people have managed to
accomplish that i mean you could think of nabokov and lolita and i mean there are books through history but she there's people are if there are still books if there's still a world in 100 years they're still going to be reading hillary mantel and meg what what are you reading now either now or next
Well, weirdly enough, there's a book, and again, I mean, it hasn't made it to Australia.
There's a book called Golden Hill by Francis Barford.
Well, I give it to everybody who comes through my door.
And because it's a bit, it's written in an ever so slightly tricky way.
I think on the cover, somebody wrote the best 18th century novel since the 18th century.
So I think a lot of people bought it and gave up on it.
So I've bought hundreds of copies in Oxfam shops for $2.99.
And then when I run out of those, I buy it at full price.
But I give it to so many people.
And I cited him in an interview that I did saying that I give everyone a copy of Golden Hill whether they like it or not.
