As if it was acknowledging me, I ran.
I don't remember the first few steps, just pounding in my ears and fumbling at the tent zipper.
I dove inside, yanked it shut, and curled into the corner, like then no one could protect me.
Then everything went silent, not quiet.
Silent.
No insects.
No breeze.
Not even the sound of my own breathing.
The world had paused, waiting.
I don't know how long I stayed like that.
My needs.
Ears.
At some point, everything went black.
When I opened my eyes, it was morning, like filtering through the tent walls, warm and soft.
I sat up too fast and smacked my head on the roof.
Everything looked normal again.
Birds chirping.
Sunlight in the trees.
The smell of smoke from the fire, which, somehow, was burning again.
I unzipped the tent slowly.
