The trail outside was empty.
Still, no wind.
No animals.
Just the steady beam of my light and trees that somehow felt closer than before.
I stayed there for a few minutes before crawling back in, didn't tell the others.
didn't sleep much either.
The next morning, we tried to shake it off.
Got back on the trail, hoping movement would help, but the unease followed us.
About halfway up the ridge, we saw someone ahead.
Just a shape at first.
A tall figure, standing on the path, maybe fifty yards ahead.
No pack.
No gear, just standing.
We sped up, calling out once or twice.
No answer.
The figure didn't move away either.
It stayed exactly the same distance ahead, like we were on a treadmill, and it was the fixed horizon.
By the time we crested the ridge, it was gone.
No footprints.
No rustling in the underbrush.
