Heavy, absolute silence.
It felt unnatural.
I tried to ignore it, blaming it on altitude, or maybe just being so far from civilization.
After midnight, I crawled into my tent.
I was still wide awake, but figured lying down might help.
I must have drifted off though, because the next thing I remember was the sound of a zipper.
Slow.
Deliberate.
I sat up fast.
I heard the flap of Drew's den fall closed, followed by footsteps crunching away from camp.
I figured he was going to take a leak.
Nothing unusual.
But then I noticed something that made my stomach drop.
His lantern, the one he always carried for bathroom runs, was still sitting by the fire, unlit.
I called his name.
Just a quick Drew.
The reply came almost instantly.
Yeah, but it didn't feel right.
It was his boy, sure, but not quite.
Too even, too exact.
