He wasn't shifting his weight.
Just standing there like he'd been planted into the ground.
Daniel called out, asking if he knew the way back to camp.
The man didn't flinch.
He didn't even breathe, at least.
Not that I could see.
We walked on.
Nerves buzzing.
And when we reached the bend where he'd been standing, there was nothing.
The trail was empty.
I told myself he'd just stepped into the wood.
Maybe he hadn't heard us.
Maybe he didn't want to deal with strangers.
But my scalp prickled, and the back of my neck felt exposed, like I shouldn't turn around.
We kept moving.
A few minutes later, the trail curved again, and there he was.
Same man, same post, same impossible distance away.
At this time, we didn't speak.
We just froze.
I could hear my own pulse in my ears, finally whispered that we should turn back.
