I do try to write some little bits and pieces, but
I think you know when you're finished.
Some writers have gone on into deeper age writing, but not always to their best advantage.
I think most writers probably knock off at about retiring age, don't they?
I told one of my children the other day that I was feeling 90 years old.
And they said, oh, that's good news, because you're 92.
I think My Father's Fortune is one of my favourite books.
I can remember how that was set off.
That was my eldest daughter, Rebecca, saying, we don't know anything about our past.
And I remember her saying, we feel we've arisen from an unknown place, she and her sisters.
Why don't you write about what you remember of your childhood and your past before you forget it?
And I started it as rather a pious chore, but I got completely overtaken by it.
And I found it a very moving experience.
Thinking about my father and the problems he was set in life, I never really thought about what his life was like from his point of view before.
But when I thought about it, I thought he'd had a pretty good go at life.
And I think I gave him a belated thank you in that book.
