Tanzania's electoral commission said that Samia Suluhu Hassan had won with almost 98% of the votes.
Since the country went to the polls this week, protests have been witnessed in various cities and towns.
Demonstrators have denounced the disqualification of two leading opposition leaders from the presidential race and also condemned what they claim is increasing repression by the government.
The United Nations said that credible reports indicate that at least 10 people have been killed in three cities since the start of the protests.
In a statement, UN chief Antonio Guterres said he was deeply concerned by the situation in the country.

Al-Fashar is the Sudanese army's last stronghold in the Darfur region, located in the west of the country.
The paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, who have besieged the city for several months, now claim they have taken control of the army's headquarters there.
The United Nations warns that thousands of civilians trapped in al-Fasha as a result of the siege have been cut off from food, water and health care.
Last week, the RSF said it was facilitating the exit of civilians from the city.
Some who have managed to leave have reported abuses by RSF soldiers, including sexual assaults.
The warring factions have created a humanitarian crisis in Sudan, with thousands of civilians killed and millions displaced.

According to the UN, there have been widespread attacks against civilians in Sudan, with an increase in reports of sexual violence in parts of the country.
The agency warns that in the besieged city of Al-Fashir in Sudan's Darfur region, thousands of children who have severe acute malnutrition are now without treatment and face an imminent risk of death.
Fighting between the paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF,
and the Sudanese armed forces has been going on for more than two years now.
