Greyhound racing in New Zealand will end in just over two months, but that might not stop some dogs from racing in another jurisdiction.
Trainers and owners have been told in a private Facebook message obtained by the Herald that a charter plane has been secured and there is capacity for 70 greyhounds to fly to Australia.
Greyhound racing in its entirety will end in New Zealand on July 31.
That will be the last day of racing.
And from August the 1st, greyhound racing in New Zealand will be gone.
As a New Zealand betting enthusiast, you can still place a bet on the dogs in Australia.
But in terms of any form of industry, that will be no more in New Zealand come July 31.
So just over two months' time.
So you can still place bets on those races outside our jurisdiction.
Look, this has been a slow burn for the industry, for greyhound racing in general, and this has really started out with multiple critical reviews over probably the last decade.
Significant changes.
These reviews have consistently raised concerns about animal welfare.
They've consistently raised concerns about high injury rates.
And at least one of the reports has raised concerns about transparency from Greyhound Racing New Zealand as the body that oversees the sport in New Zealand.
So essentially it is believed that those running the sport and those engaged in the sport have not done enough to address the ongoing welfare concerns
that have been identified in these reports.
Yeah, so greyhounds are susceptible to injury, especially if they're racing on tracks that are circular.
And this is because they run very fast and it puts a lot of strain on their legs.
So we're talking about broken hocks or legs.
