And I think that even though, you know, there are probably a lot of, we've talked about some of them, there are a lot of books that run along that spectrum and maybe this is at the smaller end of that spectrum, but it's still part of that wave of reimagining moments in history and saying, well, what about the other people who were there?
What was it like for them?
What was it like not to be able to write?
What was it like to be married off?
What was it like if you were
raped or abused that the shame lay on you you know we're grappling with that now and this book touches on those themes as well so there's some stuff in it that's really quite beautiful yeah sue monk kids the book of longings is published by tinder press
Well, the other thing I'm reading at the moment is the new book by Tommy Waringa called The Blessed Reiter.
Tommy Waringa is a Dutch writer who's been long-listed and short-listed for a whole raft of awards.
And he wrote one of my favourite books in the last couple of years called These Are the Names.
And he's a fantastic writer who works with the same translator.
And The Blessed Reiter is a beautiful, I guess it's a domestic story about a young man who's grown up on a farm with his father and now he's taking care of his father.
And his primary relationship in town is with a local prostitute named Rita.
But it's just Tommy Waringa's writing is superb.
As ever, it makes me wish I could write it, I could read it in the original language.
But that's what I'm into at the moment.
Absolute pleasure.
Thanks for having me.
Incredible story.
