This was the deadliest accident involving a B-52 since 1982, when nine crew members were killed during a training mission near Sacramento, California.

Edwards Air Force Base, site of the crash, is one of the military's premier flight testing facilities, hosting everything from advanced aircraft and drones to NASA space shuttles.

While the base is reopened following the crash,

Operations remain paused today as investigators continue their investigation.

Officials will gather evidence, of course, recover remains, review maintenance records, examine flight data, and attempt to reconstruct the aircraft's final moments.

Colonel Hayes cautioned that a final accident report...

The currently flown B-52H can carry up to 70,000 pounds of bombs, missiles, and other munitions, including nuclear weapons.

Despite ending production in 1962, the B-52 remains so valuable that the service is investing nearly $49 billion in modernization efforts, including, as I mentioned, radar systems and replacement engines.

Although it hasn't been in production for over 60 years, the B-52 remains one of the most recognizable symbols of American air power.
