And that's what I did again.
And I went back to my chair and I called my editor.
And I said, I'm not writing about Carl Lewis.
I have a better story.
They said, what are you talking about?
You know, it's Carl Lewis.
You know, you got to write.
I said, trust me, this is a better story.
And I wrote about this guy, Derek Redman, and his father, who picked him up and put him on his feet and walked around the track.
Now, I'm getting choked up just telling you that story.
And I've told that story a batch of times over the course of my life.
But as someone who is very much about children and children who are hurt or weak and taking care of them, that gets to me.
And I don't know how to write that story without emotion.
So if that's manipulative, then I guess I'm manipulative.
But I just wrote it the way that it happened.
And to this day, I hear people tell me about, oh, I remember that story about that guy.
They don't remember his name.
They don't remember the Olympics.
But they remember that a father found his son and helped him in his time of need.
And that's what I look for in my books.
