I don't want to be critical of coaches, but, you know, if you play as a fullback, you're not expected to know what the –
role of the six and the seven and the eight are i suppose in some respects but it's a really important thing and when it comes to selection is actually understanding what the role of the position is and the role is affected by where you put your head at line out time and at scrum time particularly and then what the game plan is what the strategy is during broken play so you know the let's let's look at a scrum it's the easiest one to understand so the open side flanker
Most of the time, when you have a scrum, you put the ball and you win it.
And you spin it to the right, most of the time.
And because it's easy, it's away from the other halfback.
But either way, it doesn't matter.
Whichever the open side is, is where it gets played.
So that's why we call him an open side flanker in many respects.
So his role is to get to that breakdown area, whether it's a tackle, whether a guy makes a break, he's got to get to that area where he can support the ball carrier.
