Now Walmart, the closest peer to Costco, their associates make $17.50 an hour on average. And Amazon's warehouse workers get $22 an hour. So do the simple math here and Costco is paying double the industry average, 70% more than Walmart and $50. more than Amazon. $30 an hour is insanely high wages for the retail industry.

Okay, Costco, Walmart, Amazon, peers, buddies, pals, top 10 in the Fortune 500, and yet Costco is paying them twice as much, Jack? This would be like if Goldman paid their bankers twice as much as Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan. Oh, totally. I mean, over on Wall Street, people would be freaking out and spanking each other. Basically, Basically, Costco's paying more than Santa pays his elves, Nick.

According to the Harris Poll, a record 23 million Americans are missing work today. That is one out of seven employed people are out of work today. And Nick, another 13 million of us showed up late to work today. One out of five employees are not getting employee of the week this week. No, they're not. Because one out of five Americans has a big case of the Super Bowl Mondays.

It's like the third Hilton sister dishing out goodies. But here's the wildest part about this story, Eddie's. Costco's entry-level pay after this pay raise is technically only $20 an hour, not $30 an hour. But so many employees have been working at Costco for so long, a decade or more, that the average worker pay is $30 an hour. And that illustrates Costco's great underrated superpower. loyalty.

So Jack, what's the takeaway for our buddies over at Costco? Our favorite costs are the costs that pay for themselves. Yeah, it is. According to McKinsey, the turnover in retail is 70% higher than any other industry. And when someone quits, you have to recruit, interview, hire, train. That adds up to $1,500 per worker who leaves.
The Best One Yet
š” āIdeas = Currencyā ā TED Talksā CEO audition. Costcoās girl math. āMuskingā the US Govāt.
So if you think about it, a $1,500 pay raise, that pays for itself if it prevents that worker from leaving. But at Costco's high wages, they don't just prevent you from leaving. They get you to stay for eight years on average. Eight years. Again, retail is famous for high turnover. It's considered a job, not a career. You don't stay there for more than a few months, typically.

š” āIdeas = Currencyā ā TED Talksā CEO audition. Costcoās girl math. āMuskingā the US Govāt.
But at Costco, it is a career. The average employee stays for eight years. In dog years, that's 56 years. In retail years, that's a millennium, Jack. So Costco, they've done it since the beginning. They believe that higher pay for the workers makes for happier workers, which makes for happier customers too. But that loyalty also saves them on hiring costs long-term.

It's the cost that pays for itself. Jack, could you whip up the takeaways for us to kick off the week? TED Talk, which is a nonprofit, by the way, is looking for a new leader. Why is the TED brand so valuable? Because ideas are the currency of white-collar work. This story also explains a brand new stock market phenomenon, the power premium. And our third and final story, Costco pays double the rest of retail, 30 bucks an hour. And that doesn't just win loyalty. Oh, there is nothing Jack and I appreciate more than a cost that pays for itself. I think that's another way to describe girl math. A cost that pays for itself?

The Best One Yet
š” āIdeas = Currencyā ā TED Talksā CEO audition. Costcoās girl math. āMuskingā the US Govāt.
It's called musking. Musking is when you eliminate as many workers and costs at a company as possible and then just kind of cross your fingers and see if it still works. That's shopify.com slash profiting. So let's stick on that since you brought it up, skipping breakfast. I think it's, you got to wait six hours. I think in your book, you said six hours after you wake up is when you should first, you know, break your fast, I guess, or eat your lunch. Is that true?

So fastestway.com. I'll stick that in my show notes. So when people think about fasting, I think the big buzzword is ketosis. Everybody knows about ketosis and that's what they want to enter into a state of ketosis. But then there's also another important world called autophagy. Phagy? Autophagy?

Autophagy. Sorry, I read it. I didn't hear it. Autophagy, right? So tell us about the difference between ketosis and autophagy.

It is so, so interesting. You know, I was always never a fan of fasting because I grew up Muslim. Right. I'm the least religious person ever.

And so, like, I was tortured being fasted fasting during Ramadan. And it was so hard because you're not even allowed to drink water. And I think spiritually, I respect it. You know, I don't I haven't fasted since. high school because I decided that it made me sluggish and that I couldn't compete. I wasn't going to... When I was getting my MBA, I was like, I won't get a 4.0 if I fast.

When I was in corporate, I won't be competitive. Now I'm an entrepreneur. Same thing. I feel like I can't be competitive if I'm fasting for a month. And then plus, I feel like it's kind of an unhealthy way to do it. So you only eat... when it's dark outside.

And a lot of people usually wake up at 4 a.m., they eat, then they'll eat again at like 7 or 8 when the sun goes down, and they'll probably eat all night. And then you can't have water or coffee during the day. So what do you think about this kind of fasting? It can't be good for you.

Hmm. That's, that's super interesting. So let's talk about, uh, I know we're running a little short on time, so actually I'm going to skip to something else. Let's do a quick fire segment. I'm going to rattle off some ways that you can fast and why don't you tell us quickly what they are and the good and the bad with each one. So let's start with the 16, eight fast.

You guys can get all that information in Dave's book. Dave, the last question I ask all my guests is what is your secret to profiting in life?

So you had this computer science background and you also had a love of coffee pretty early, which is which is kind of funny looking at your career now and the fact that you created Bulletproof Coffee so many years later and it's all started with caffeine T-shirts. It's kind of do you ever look back at that and think like, wow, like I was on to it already, like since back then?

Yeah. So let's go back to you said you got into Entrepreneur Magazine. I think I read that you were 297 pounds when you were in that magazine. So what made you decide like, you know what, I've had it with computer science. I want to kind of take what I learned with computer science and apply it to my body now because I'm almost 300 pounds.

That is such an amazing story. And it's so cool how just having good intentions will almost always when you're starting a business or starting something, having good intentions and just wanting to help people, eventually the money will come find you. You know, you just wanted to put that information out there to the world.

And it all worked out because you were doing a service to others and having pure intentions with it. I find that a lot with all the people that I talk with.
