It's suing the company 3M and seeking $2 billion in damages, alleging that 3M provided firefighting foam which contaminated 28 Australian defence bases.
The government's lawsuit also alleges that 3M knew that its firefighting foam contained PFAS, or so-called forever chemicals,
and that it withheld knowledge linking the chemicals to adverse effects.
The $2 billion lawsuit was announced today by the Attorney-General, Michelle Rowland.

The company 3M is one of the world's largest manufacturers of PFAS chemicals and has faced similar lawsuits in the past.

Another woman has been charged with terrorism offences, the latest in the saga of the so-called ISIS brides who travelled to Syria to be part of the group.
An assistant commissioner for the Australian Federal Police, Hilda Zirek, made the announcement today.
According to police, the woman travelled to Syria in 2013 or 14 and returned to live in Melbourne in September last year.
She has been charged with entering or remaining in a declared area and being a member of a terrorist organisation.

In the United States, the woman who successfully sued Donald Trump for sexual assault is now the subject of a criminal investigation by the US Justice Department.
E. Jean Carroll, a successful magazine columnist, sued Trump twice with both suits focused on an incident in which she alleges Trump raped her in the mid-1990s in the changing room of a New York department store.
Carroll won both of those lawsuits.
Now the US Justice Department is investigating Carol for perjury according to a report from CNN.
The investigation focuses on Carol's claims that she was not receiving outside funding to bring her lawsuits when in fact a left-wing billionaire had paid some of her legal fees.
