And the people who are closest to him, they counted on his reality.
And now they're in trouble.
And Beria, this awful man, gets arrested and then executed.
But there's a problem.
The encyclopedias.
The encyclopedias.
It's sitting in people's homes.
It's on paper.
The state had spent years singing the praises of Beria in this.
And the Great Soviet Encyclopedia has sent out an entire entry on the glories of this guy who had just been executed as a treasonous monster.
It's all printed there.
Ah, but here's what you do.
So the solution was some absolute next-level, top-notch, industrial-grade gaslighting.
Because people who had a copy of the encyclopedia were sent some extra encyclopedia pages on the Bering Strait, along with instructions on how to cut the pages out on Beria and replace them with the new pages.
But they can still read the old pages.
You could still read the old pages, but you're not supposed to read the old pages.
And the reason why this is such an amazing Olympic-level manipulation is that people are basically being instructed to participate in the lie.
They've been asked to gaslight themselves.
This is when you know you're dealing with real professionals.
Because what you've done is you forced the target of the lie to share the responsibility for the lie with the liars.
