So, parents of these children with the condition have not been able to get the help they need, both in the UK and in Somalia, because they fear judgement from the community. So they struggle on in silence. But things are starting to change. In 2020, a Somali autism advocate introduced a new word, mangar, meaning unique mind, to describe autism in Somali.
