In Defense of White Lotus Season 3...

With other people, it's the actual systems of government, systems of the way we spend money. And suddenly, all these things sort of disappear. You know, and that is what is so fascinating to me about Piper. I actually think she has one of the most very predictable storylines in the show, but it's very, very funny and well done.

I think the way it perfectly juxtaposes Saxon's experience at the White Lotus. And then we get to Lachlan. Lachlan is this blank canvas of the family pulled between two separate ideologies. His brother who values wealth and sex and money versus his sister who values spirituality and this deeper meaning to life. So because he is such a people pleaser, he does both, right?

He spends that one night with his brother indulging in that life. They party, they drink, they do drugs. He gets with the girl, quite literally fulfilling his brother's desire to get off in life by getting him off. However, that pisses off his brother and makes his brother angry. So Lachlan swings the complete opposite direction.

He then spends the night with his sister at the temple, letting go of all these carnal desires, spending the night pursuing this deeper meaning of life, trying to find spiritualism. And then when he tells his sister that he wants to spend the year with her at this temple, that also pisses her off.

And I think what Lachlan's story is meant to show is that you cannot people-please your way into pleasing yourself. Because real happiness comes from within. And if you constantly spend your time trying to do things for someone else or impress somebody else, you are only using your energy for them, which will result in your own disappointment.

Real happiness comes from forging your own path and finding what that means to you. There's things you're going to like and things you're not going to like. And that is not something that you can do for somebody else, be told by somebody else. Happiness is this own sense of morality, foundational, your job, your relationships, everything. Like it is not this one size fits all solution.

And you cannot people-please your way into feeling this greater sense of fulfillment. You're just giving your energy away to other people who are never going to appreciate it the same way you do, which is very much what happens with Lachlan. And then we get to the dad, Timothy Ratliff.

And what's fascinating about the dad is he's really the only one that actually goes on any sort of spiritual epiphany. He starts thinking that his family is going to be absolutely miserable and die from this massive scandal that's about to happen to them. So he quite literally tries to kill them. But by the end of it, he realizes that his family is stronger than he thought they were.

In fact, I even think he finds out that maybe he's a little stronger than he thought he was when he stops them from almost committing suicide. And the dynamic between Victoria and the dad is so interesting because they never even touch each other once. No hug, no kiss, nothing. Like, Victoria is so disassociated from him that she never even notices that he was the one who stole her lorazepam.

constantly showing signs of it. He's like sleeping in all the time. He has this blatant incoherence. He's not really present in any sort of conversation, barely even saying full sentences sometimes. And it kind of makes you wonder if they ever even love each other. And it's so interesting to me that this is not even a plot point or even brought up once. And
