Meanwhile, European trade ministers have been discussing their response to the new US tariff regime. They're drawing up a list of countermeasures to be agreed next week, with more to follow.

Well, for his part, President Trump revealed that the US has been holding direct talks with Iran and that a high-level meeting was due to be held on Saturday.
