Whereas what happened this time is, I think,
you know, there was really a realization that this time we have to do something and we have to respond differently because, A, Denmark is such a fundamental issue, not because of Greenland per se, but because of the threat of territorial integrity from an ally.
And two, we have seen that, you know, we thought we had solved issues, at least on the trade front, with an agreement, but that agreement failed.
might be overturned any moment from the US, depending on what the president might want next.
And so they tried to give a different impression, a different response this time.
There were some pretty strong statements.
Although, again, the EU does not have any real leverage vis-a-vis the US, or it cannot really use that leverage unless it wants to risk its relationship on all other fronts.
start discussing retaliatory measures there was still a lot of focus on trying to get the U.S.
to de-escalate and take those threats off the table and in truth even though you had some nuanced responses with some countries like France saying we should be using our trade bazooka that's a
that would allow the EU to impose some serious economic countermeasures.
Most countries were still really hesitant and some were advocating for just go with the dialogue.
And this time it seemed to have worked.
So the anti-corrosion instrument was designed to face a very different threat, that is China, and essentially it gives the EU control.
very strong and far-reaching powers to design economic countermeasures.
So it's a bit of a box, and then the European Commission would decide to fill it with different kind of countermeasures, depending on what the threat at hand is.
But it could include things like restricting market access, access to the EU market to companies, in this case, US companies.
It could include counter tariffs.
It could include a range of very different things.
In order to trigger it, you would need a qualified majority of EU countries, so that's countries representing at least 65% of the EU population, to task the Commission with using it.
