My original design was sort of an elegant symbol.
It had two people in a canoe and it had the arch, you know, sort of fading into the mist in the background.
In the U.S.
It's very misshapen.
Instead of two guys in a canoe, it had three, Larry, Moe, and Curly.
They're going downhill upriver, and the arch crosses the river from Illinois to Missouri.
Plus, the trees are made of broccoli.
I got the first email from someone in Georgia saying, what do you think about what the U.S.
Mint did to your state quarter design?
And at that point, I had no idea.
I didn't know what the U.S.
Mint had done to my state quarter design.
There was clearly something wrong.
They dumbed it down to the point where it was unacceptable.
It was just unusable.
And they misspelled the word bicentennial.
gathered a few of my supporters and went to protest.
And so I put out the call on AOL and invited anybody who was upset about it to join me at the state capitol.
And about 50 people showed up.
