The Planet Reigate Podcast
71: The local board-gamers group, your ‘wants’ for Reigate High Street
 and more

So what would you like to see on Reigate High Street? It was a topic of conversation on socials recently on We Love Reigate. And I thought I'd pre-see everything, put it all together, take out the really interesting bits and bring those ideas to you. And these ideas may make you go, yeah, of course that's what Reigate High Street needs. Or you may go, what a ridiculous idea. That'll never work.

Whichever way, it's kind of a bit of a talking topic for you to be discussing, perhaps either by yourself or with your friends, with your family, when you meet the girls for coffee, perhaps. So what does Reigate High Street need? Amanda says a small next for basics, like the one in Haywards Heath. Also to collect deliveries and that'll attract many people in to buy and look at other shops as well.

One that does cockles as well. Charmaine wrote really good, well-stocked craft and haberdashery store and also a good children's toy shop as well. Sophie says an upmarket soft play kids club, one with an upmarket cafe, would go down really well. A Reigate version of Wacky Kingdom would be great, and Emma agreed as well.

Meats, fresh veg, fish and seafood, tins, pastas, gelato, freshly made sandwiches, food to go. Proper New York style deli. That would be banging, says Craig. For Sonia and Melanie, it's a German bakery, a German deli, or a German restaurant. Some of these are quite niche, aren't they? Steph wants an event space, particularly now the Harlequin is out of action.

Tamara wrote, people say they want a fishmonger and an organic knicker shop. I think she's... I think she's having a bit of a digging you in the ribs there. Organic knicker shop, and then they forget about using them. I think we've ended up with the high street we deserve, sadly. And Bonnie says, a proper Italian or Japanese? Jen wants an Indonesian restaurant.

Philip pointed out that rents and rates are far too high for small retailers. He says, I had a shop called Camzin in Bell Street in the 1970s, and the first thing I did was to ask the landlords if I could pay the rent on a monthly basis, and that was accepted. However, they are reluctant to do this even today.

In a small shop in Maidstone, rent was paid on a percentage of turnover, and that was nearly 50 years ago. Until the landlords change things, the high street will gradually die. Sad day, Philip concludes. Two different Charlottes say what we'd want is somewhere to buy knickers, bras, socks, vests and pants and independent affordable lingerie or underwear shop for women.
