So we are honored to be joined by the director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Sarah J. Bloomfield.
Sarah also serves on the International Auschwitz Council and International Treblinka Council, has been named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French Republic, and is a recipient of the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.

It's a pleasure to have you here.
Sarah, that's a fantastic point in how remembering the Holocaust is so vital to democracy.
Do you mind going any deeper on the relationship between the museum and the federal government?
How does some of that come to bear in your day-to-day?
That speaks to my own personal experience.
One of my earliest memories in life was going to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.
Not your D.C.
location, but it was very poignant and stuck with me.
And I asked my mom as well this morning, just got thinking, why did you take me?
For her, this is just a part of the human story, the American story, an important thing that she wanted her kids to understand.
I'm jealous.
I'll leave it at that.

So you're touching on, I think this is a challenge that every historian, whether it's public history, we're talking about museums, we're talking about academics, writing monographs, there's this grappling with the multifaceted nature of any history.
