Throughout his entire childhood, he was abused and neglected by his family, and all of this led him into using cocaine, which had even more of a negative impact on his behaviors and his mental health.
Basically, they wanted to make it clear that Brian wasn't some psychopath, deranged, calculated, cold criminal.
He was abused, unintelligent, and just needed money, and things just went too far.
They were basically just trying to argue this so that the jury wouldn't sentence him to death.

What he did to Reagan was horrific and he deserved the worst possible punishment for this.
At the end of the trial, which lasted just over a week, the jury was sent off for deliberations.
They deliberated for about five and a half hours before they came back with their verdict.
They found that Brian Goolsbee was guilty on all counts, including kidnapping, rape, and murder.
