Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
My question is that my aunt, well, my sister-in-law had my aunt picked up, And she's about 90 years old. Had her what? Had her picked up. Not picked up by the police. Had her picked up and sent into a nursing home.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
Well, that's what we tried to find out. The police said that they didn't do it. So they convinced her. They put her in a car. Who's they?
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
Correct. They brought the little van over, loaded her up, told her they're going to the bank. They signed some paperwork. They signed some paperwork, which is transferring her account or adding their names to her account so they have access. The nursing home. Yes. And then the bus went one way, and my sister-in-law went the other way.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
Well, she has property, so they figured that once they gain access to her you know, her accounts and what she has. They figured they could cash her out and she'd be gone. They're banking on the fact that she may pass away.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
uh he acts all confused says i don't know what you're talking about she needed to go she's uh mentally disturbed she doesn't know where she's at did she need to go aside from the property it wasn't time for her to go no actually she's uh pretty independent for 90 years old she still drives she still pays her bills not anymore um no i can't get her out do what I can't get her out.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
We're barred access. We're barred access from seeing her.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
Yes, we have, and it's very costly. And they told me to sit down because they wanted to let me know what this would cost and how long this would take.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
We go to court. This is not his specialty.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
We get in front of the judge, and lo and behold, the attorney who's overseeing her says, in the nursing home, who's appointed her attorney, the attorney that's working what we thought was working for her best interest, they're both working together. So they go in front of the judge.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
No, so she has an attorney. So apparently they appointed her an attorney, not allowing me to sit here and say, I've got an attorney. So you can bring your attorney if you'd like to. Here's the hearing.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
Now, we asked to have guardianship. And she said, we'll take a look at that. So we have presented the information for that. And they went first, brought all these people in, brought a lady in that said, well, she has Alzheimer's. This is what's going on. So when we questioned her, she's been doing this less than a year. And she said, well, it's really not my specialty.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
So when we asked the judge, it's not even her specialty. She doesn't even know whether she can assess the lady's mental state. He goes, I'll take that into account, but let's continue on.
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
Well, the problem is that every time we turn a corner, it seems like we run into a dead end. And the thing is that the judge...
The Ramsey Show
Building Wealth Is Hard but Being Broke Is Harder
the person that we thought we hired not my attorney but the person we thought we hired to help is basically building a case against us why did you hire them well we didn't hire them they were they we well we hired them to help and then basically they weren't really helping so you need a new attorney like what dave said the guy whoever you're working you need to start fresh that's the advice

It’s Not Too Late to Get Back on Financial Track
This is more of a curiosity type question. I understand that real estate, the value of real estate goes up and the value of anything goes down. But the question is, why is that? Why does real estate go up? Why does cars, why does mobile homes and all that stuff, why does that go down? That's more of a curiosity, more of a question. what's the underlying reason for that?

Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
Yeah, I'm at my parents' house, and she's already got her own place.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
I'm sorry, but I think she's wanting to split this so she can pursue with the other person that she's been with. So that's why she's wanting to get this done so she can marry this other guy. Yeah.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
Yeah, it's pre-existing. I've looked, and the only place that would cover me, the premium was like $1,800 a month, and I just can't afford that. And that's the only place they even would take a chance on me. But, I mean, unfortunately, what I have is I have a glioblastoma, which is pretty much uh, that's about the worst you can get as far as brain cancer.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
And even, even if they could do surgery, it's, it's pretty much, it's pretty much a terminal diagnosis. And they say without treatment, maybe four to six months, but even with treatment, it's not a lot of people even last a year. So unfortunately, as this progresses, I won't even be able to work anymore because, you know, it's going to affect my motor skills and everything. So, uh, It's, yeah.

Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
I'm kind of going through a really bad time right now. I'm at the beginning stages of a divorce. I found out about an affair. And I need to know what to be doing financially right now. Everything's been split up without me knowing. But another curveball is about three weeks ago, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Oh, my goodness. Randy.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
So right now, I just don't know what to be doing right now. You know, on that piece, I know where I'm going to go if this happens, but... I'm just kind of, everything has just, the last couple of months has just been completely just flipped upside down, and I need to know what to be. Thankfully, my job is pretty flexible. I can work, make my own schedule.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
I'm trying to work as much as I can, but some days I just don't feel well enough. Don't have, we've gotten, we had gotten about $35,000, $40,000 of debt paid down, but I still have a little bit, and I still have about $10,000 in debt. Medical debt. So I just need to know what to be doing right now during this time.

About three weeks ago.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
It's terminal and I'm about to lose the insurance. So that's another curveball.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
I won't have insurance. And out of pocket, I can't afford it. And they tried to get me into programs. I made too much to get any kind of assistance. So even with treatment, the survival time is about nine months. Oh, my gosh.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
Once the divorce goes through, which she's really pushing for, I will no longer be on the insurance.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
I know this is a money show, but... I think what I'm thinking is if I do pass... And I don't want my family, like my parents, to have to worry about that debt. I think that's what I'm thinking of right now.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
Because since we've done it, we don't have a lot saved up. I have a small life insurance policy, but obviously right now my wife's the benefactor and I've been told I can't switch it as long as we're legally married. I don't know. That's just what the lawyer told me.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
I don't know. When you say small, how much is it? It's $250,000.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
I can upon divorce, but I don't... It's just, yeah, I was kind of wanting to switch it beforehand just in case and have my parents be the benefactor just to make sure that, you know, all that's taken care of and that they're taken care of. But I've spoken to two different lawyers. I seem to be getting like different answers. So I'm just really kind of confused right now.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
Yeah. Cause they're going to be going through enough. I don't want to burden them with anything else. That's right. Is there a way to. Thankfully they took, thankfully they, I was actually, I, when I, when this happened, I pretty much was kicked out and I was going to live in my car, but thankfully they said no way. So I've actually been able to live with them to keep costs down.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
But, you know, so they'd been really, my parents have been great through this, but it's not something that they should have to be doing with this, but. So I'm just kind of just really...
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
overwhelmed by everything that's gone on and just you know a little bit just frustrated that i don't know what to do of course of course you would feel that way like uh i mean 100 this is a lot this is a curve this is a huge curveball and it's it's yeah i don't have to tell you um but yeah it's rough on the coming because i'm only i'm only 37 years old so it's like you know i'm not i'm not an old man so it's like uh yeah i'm trying to think through some creative things you can do here not
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
She doesn't want to do that. She wants the divorce. She doesn't want to do legal separation, anything like that. She wants a divorce.
The Ramsey Show
Everyone Makes Financial Mistakes – Don’t Let Yours Define You
Pretty much she's debt-free. Like I said, I've got about $1,500 on a credit card and about $9,700 in medical, because I've had a lot of medical issues the last couple of years. So it's that. But pretty much outside of that, I don't have a car payment. What about a mortgage? No, we didn't have a mortgage. Yeah. We were renting.

Gentlemen, thanks for taking my call. Sure. Looking for some divine wisdom.

Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
You called the wrong show, brother. Oh, sorry about that. A little bit of a disagreement between the spouse and I. Yes, we'll solve it. Okay, well, Kim, I'm holding you to your word. So yesterday was our 25th anniversary. I really tried to get on the air yesterday, but couldn't get on. In regards to our oldest dependent, Junior's a good kid. He's going to be a junior in college.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
He's also in flight training. He's following in my footsteps. I'm an airline pilot. He wants to do the same thing. But it's expensive, and I want him to have a piece of the pie. My parents had me pay for part of my education. I've been bankrolling it, cashing it as we go. We make good money. That's kind of our kicker. My wife thinks we make really good money.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
And that she thinks he should start with a fresh coat of paint and nothing holding him back. And I think he needs to pay for part of it. Not right away. Let him get his first job maybe six months later. Start a payment plan back to mom and pops.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
I want him to have a piece of it to where some ownership in it because college is one thing. He wants to be a pilot. Great. That's to the tune of about $80,000 on top of college to go through all of your flight training.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
What was the understanding? Yeah, he gets a $15,000 scholarship. He's a smart kid. He was going to do engineering until his last semester of high school, and then he hated all of his engineering classes. And we're like, okay, so now what? So now we kind of scrambled. He's always shown an interest in aviation. So who's paying for college now?
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
Yeah, he's a junior. We're paying for it. There's no loans.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
There was no agreement. We'll talk about this down the road. There was no amount set. But I think we need to have some kind of, especially with adding the aviation. Because the aviation is on top of college.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
I'm talking, I'm talking some skin in the game, like, like $20,000 payable, like two, 300 bucks a month. After he gets his first job, he'll start out making probably $80,000, $90,000, $100,000 a year as a new airline pilot. I'm not talking I don't want him to pay $80,000 and then pay for his college. I want just some ownership like I did. I was about $25,000 I paid back to my dad.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
He's working in the summer at home now. He does work some during school. He has a lot of fun. I know that during school. Yeah, I guess.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
No, I mean, he's had a fairly easy past, right?
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
I think he would agree. He's a pretty humble kid. He has a nice little Toyota he gets to drive.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
I kind of am, yeah. My wife and I have also disagreed on that.
The Ramsey Show
Hard Decisions Today Bring Freedom Tomorrow
She would agree more with you, which I was not counting on.
