I had moved my cot down to the cabin that very morning.
He looked at the cot, which was not there.
It was the first time he'd been in the tower since I'd moved it.
The corner where the cot had sat was empty.
The bedding was gone.
The lamp that had sat on the crate next to the cot was gone.
He looked at the empty corner, and then he looked at me.
He smiled.
He said, got it?
Then he left.
I stood at the fire finder and I watched him walk back down the south ridge.
My heart was going.
My hands were tingling.
I knew, the way you know something in a part of your body that isn't your brain, that something had shifted.
He had been testing me for weeks.
He knew I had lied about where I slept.
He knew I knew he had noticed.
I radioed dispatch.
I told them what had just happened.
I asked for somebody to come up as soon as they could.
