Good morning.
So yesterday, on Sunday, you had an Israeli attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Israel said it was targeting the headquarters of the Hezbollah militant group.
It's a headquarters, a local operating base, they said.
There is no evidence, though, that that was the case.
They seem to have struck two floors of a building in a residential district of Beirut.
So after those strikes occurred,
And after weeks of Iran saying that Israel had to de-escalate its attacks on southern Lebanon and warned against any attacks on Beirut that would result in retaliation, Iran decided to retaliate.
So what we saw was strikes on Israel, and as you said, it was the first breach of the ceasefire between those two axes.
Now, since then, you've had a volley, an exchange of fire from both sides.
Israel retaliated with strikes on Iran.
You've now had reports of explosions in central and eastern Tehran this morning.
according to my colleagues who are based in Tehran, and then you're seeing constant sirens across Israel.
So this is the most serious sort of moment of the ceasefire faltering since April 17th.
I mean, the word ceasefire has taken on a variety of different meanings over the last few months.
Although this is the first sort of instance of direct fire between Israel and Iran,
You have had instances of attacks on Gulf facilities in the last few weeks.
We've seen attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
So the ceasefire is a sort of broad term that seems to encompass kinetic attacks in the region.
No, I mean, Lebanon is proving to be the spoiler in these talks.
