of my life in books that i recorded about four or five years ago where i interviewed him about the devil in the deep water and also just get into his books this third book
just demonstrates why he is one of the twistiest, cleverest mystery writers you will ever come across.
It's set on a post-apocalyptic island, which is the last refuge for 122 villagers and three scientists, after a mystery fog has destroyed the world.
And in case you don't think that's enough, there is a murder of one of the scientists.
And the villagers have 107 hours to solve the case.
Otherwise, the barrier preventing the fog will drop and they'll all be dead.
And that will be the end of humanity.
And just in case you needed an additional twist, the omniscient AI that controls their lives has cleared everybody's memories of the night of the murder.
So you know that one of them's the murderer, but they don't know, even if they are, who did the murder.
It's twisty, it's kind of warped, but it is absolutely brilliant.
Because the AI has dropped the barrier once the murder has happened and will only lift the barrier again to prevent the fog from approaching the island if the murder is solved.
It's called The Last Murder at the End of the World.
And it examines questions of artificial intelligence, truth and lies, genetic modification, and also cyborgs and so on and so forth.
I mean, there's a bit of science fiction.
There's a bit of classic horror, a bit like James Herbert's Fog in there.
And there's an awful lot of my favorite sort of detective fiction in there.
It's really clever.
And it's also quite a delve into human nature.
You know, there's this island.
There's only 125 souls left.
