The study found that on average the Swedish husbands were 11% more likely to suffer from mental health issues when their wives started to earn more than them. It was conducted by Demid Getik, an economist at the University of Durham in the north of England.
His rather unusual research was possible because he used to work in Sweden, which, alongside other Scandinavian countries, keeps records of both health diagnoses and tax returns. This allowed him to track the collective mental health and earnings of couples over the course of a decade.

Because the data was so detailed, he was able to see that if a man was usurped financially by his wife, his well-being seemed to decline, often accompanied by substance abuse. But if the husband for some reason regained the top spot, his mental health would often improve.
